Monolayered Carbides of Main Group Elements (Si, Ge, Sn and Pb) for NO2 Gas Sensing: Insights from First-Principle Studies

Anshul Yadav

Summary: This study compares the sensing ability of carbides of main group elements for NO2 using density functional theory calculations. The electronic properties were studied through density of states, atomic charge analysis, and frontier molecular orbital analysis based on optimized geometries. The results showed that the orientation of the NO2 gas molecule differed for each optimized nanosheet-NO2 cluster. Analysis of the atomic charges revealed charge transfer from the nanosheets to the NO2 molecule during interaction. HOMO-LUMO distributions confirmed this analysis. Adsorption energies were calculated to understand the thermodynamics of NO2 sensing interactions on different carbides, considering the basis set superposition error. The findings indicated that NO2 was chemisorbed on GRA, SiC, and GeC, while the sensing was physical in nature on SnC and PbC nanosheets. Overall analysis showed that SiC and GeC nanosheets exhibited better interactions and sensing of NO2 compared to other carbides.
