Virtual outcrop geology comes of age: The application of consumer-grade virtual reality hardware and software to digital outcrop data analysis

Thomas D. Seers et al.

Summary: This work explores the application of consumer-grade virtual reality hardware and software to the analysis of digital outcrop data. The results show that fault statistics obtained using VR analysis are broadly equivalent to those acquired from conventional flat panel displays. However, VR analysis incurs censoring of finer fault traces due to limited resolution of the outcrop model textured mesh.

Detailed structural analysis of digital outcrops: A learning example from the Kermanshah-Qulqula radiolarite basin, Zagros Belt, Iran

Adam J. Cawood et al.

Summary: This study presents a digital outcrop example and associated structural analysis of highly deformed sedimentary strata from the Zagros Belt of Iran. By providing open-access digital data, the authors aim to make this outcrop exposure accessible to a wide range of geoscientists and bridge the gap between field-based training and proficiency in 3D digital environments required of professional geoscientists. Discussions on interpretation uncertainties and the importance of considering data quality and geological assumptions contribute to geoscience education.

Direct Georeferencing UAV-SfM in High-Relief Topography: Accuracy Assessment and Alternative Ground Control Strategies along Steep Inaccessible Rock Slopes

Paul Ryan Nesbit et al.

Summary: Steep rock slopes provide opportunities and challenges in Earth science applications. Direct georeferencing of UAVs can generate high-resolution 3D datasets, but large vertical errors may occur in near-vertical terrains. Multiple image angles result in the highest precision, while ground control points greatly reduce mean errors.

Virtual outcrop models: Digital techniques and an inventory of structural models from North-Northwest Iberia (Cantabrian Zone and Asturian Basin)

Hodei Uzkeda et al.

Summary: This study presents the procedure employed to obtain data, construct models and interpret them geologically for virtual outcrop models from the Cantabrian Zone and Asturian Basin in the Iberian Peninsula. The digital techniques and data used include fieldwork, Google Earth images, orthophotographs, stereoscopical pairs of photographs, and virtual outcrop models constructed using Structure from Motion photogrammetry. The analysis of these models has provided valuable geological information that would have been difficult to obtain using traditional techniques.

The use of immersive virtual reality for teaching fieldwork skills in complex structural terrains

J. Harknett et al.

Summary: Innovations in virtual reality technology have opened up exciting possibilities in teaching earth sciences, allowing students to experience complex geological sites that would normally be inaccessible. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for high-quality online learning resources, and using virtual reality experiences has shown potential for enhanced learning outcomes in geosciences. This paper presents a project that utilizes virtual reality to improve student learning in complex geological environments, specifically focusing on the Husavik Triple Junction in northern Iceland.

3D outcrop modelling of large discordant breccia bodies in basinal carbonates of the Apulian margin, Italy

Danica Jablonska et al.

Summary: The study focuses on large discordant breccia bodies in the Gargano Promontory of southern Italy and utilizes UAV-based Structure from Motion Photogrammetry to document inaccessible cliff-side exposures. The breccias formed at different times and by different processes, possibly due to solution exploiting pre-existing fracture networks. The findings shed light on the tectonic and gravitational evolution in platform-to-basinal settings and the implications for fluid-flow migration and compartmentalization of tight carbonate reservoirs.
