Summary: This study analyzed the spatial and temporal patterns of wetland changes in the Aral Sea Delta in Central Asia. The results showed that the wetland area has increased due to human activities such as agricultural expansion and construction of reservoirs and irrigation canals. This increase in wetland area contrasts with the drying up of the Aral Sea and has negative implications for ecological restoration.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of wetlands and arsenic concentrations in shallow groundwater in two inland basins along the Yellow River catchment. It is found that wetland coverage has increased over time and longer existence of wetlands may lead to higher probability of high-arsenic groundwater distribution.

Summary: Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) can be used as an indicator of crop photosynthetic activity and vegetation stress. This study compares the effects of spectral resolution on SIF quantification using different hyperspectral imagers. The results show that there is a correlation between SIF quantified from narrow-band and sub-nanometer imagers, with the narrow-band imager producing larger SIF estimates. Ground-level SIF also shows strong relationships with airborne retrievals from both types of imagers. Predictive algorithms using SIF from either the narrow-band or sub-nanometer sensor perform similarly in estimating leaf nitrogen concentration, supporting the use of narrow-band resolution imagery for assessing SIF variability in plant phenotyping and precision agriculture.

Summary: Our study suggests that network integration in soil microbial co-occurrence networks does not change over successional time series, but is influenced by soil pH and total organic carbon content. Bacteria play a greater role in the network structure, and the number and relative abundance of keystone species increase significantly when soil pH increases or total organic carbon decreases.

Summary: Due to global warming and human activities, the ecological environment of the Yellow River source area has undergone profound changes and desertification has become increasingly prominent. This study proposes an optimal desertification monitoring index based on feature space and uses Landsat images to construct it. The spatial and temporal variation of desertification in the Yellow River source area and its driving mechanism are studied using Geodetector. The research findings provide valuable insights for decision-making on desertification control in the Three-River Source Region.

Summary: This study identifies the influences of anthropogenic and natural factors on groundwater temperature in cities, with natural factors having a greater impact at greater depths, while anthropogenic factors decrease. Mitigating future groundwater warming requires minimizing surface sealing and restoring permeability in heavily sealed areas.

Summary: Kazakhstan's grassland systems, part of the largest contiguous grassland system in the world, have been understudied despite their historical importance for agricultural and pastoral practices. In this study, we examined the individual and interactive effects of various social-environmental system (SES) drivers on vegetation dynamics in Kazakhstan. We found that snow depth and spring drought played major roles in explaining the variance in vegetation greenness, and the freeze-thaw process also had a significant impact across the country. Moisture and topographic factors had a greater influence on vegetation growth compared to socioeconomic factors, but the interaction between socioeconomic and environmental drivers amplified their impacts. Our findings provide insights into the causes of grassland degradation and can inform ecological protection efforts in semiarid regions.

Summary: The study revealed that there was an increasing trend of vegetation NPP in the Hengduan mountain area from 2000 to 2015, with the gravity center mainly concentrated in Zhongdian County. Vegetation NPP showed a moderately positive correlation with temperature, accumulated temperature (>10 degrees C), and sunshine, while having an overall negative relationship with precipitation. The dominant factors and interactive dominant factors changed in different sub-regions over the study period.

Summary: This study developed a methodology to derive the spatio-temporal patterns of land use conflict in China from 2001 to 2017, finding that areas with strong land use conflict had a higher frequency of land use change, with significant differences between two sides of the Hu Huanyong line. The main types of land use conflict in China included strong competition between cultivated land and grassland, rapid expansion of construction land, and high risk of desertification.
