Seismic faults of the 2022 Mw 6.6 Menyuan, Qinghai earthquake and their implication for the regional seismogenic structures

Wanpeng Feng et al.

Summary: The Menyuan earthquake of magnitude 6.6 occurred on January 8th, 2022 in the Menyuan Basin, Qinghai. It was followed by over 600 aftershocks, with the largest having a magnitude of 5.1. The mainshock and most of the aftershocks were strike-slip events, and the seismic data and geodetic analysis provided insights into the characteristics of these seismic events.

Rapid Earthquake Source Description Using Variometric-Derived GPS Displacements toward Application to the 2019 Mw 7.1 Ridgecrest Earthquake

Jianfei Zang et al.

Summary: Using near-field high-rate GPS displacements for real-time inversion of earthquake fault slips can improve the accuracy of earthquake early warning or tsunami early warning. This study demonstrates the rapid modeling of the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquake using real-time GPS displacements derived from a variometric approach with readily available broadcast ephemeris. The results show that the variometric displacements are comparable to real-time precise point positioning displacements, highlighting their value for rapid earthquake source description with only broadcast ephemeris.

Three-Dimensional Surface Displacements of the 8 January 2022 Mw6.7 Menyuan Earthquake, China from Sentinel-1 and ALOS-2 SAR Observations

Jihong Liu et al.

Summary: This study used SAR data to investigate the surface displacement and strain characteristics of the 2022 Menyuan earthquake, revealing that it was dominated by left-lateral slip and had larger fault-parallel displacement on the southern side. It also identified a severely deformed near-fault area and clearly expanding and compressed zones.

First results using high-rate BDS-3 observations: retrospective real-time analysis of 2021 Mw 7.4 Madoi (Tibet) earthquake

Kai Zheng et al.

Summary: The recent Madoi earthquake in Tibet offers an opportunity to examine the role of global navigation satellite systems in capturing seismic waveforms. The study shows that the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) has little impact on velocity and displacement estimation and that adding a third frequency can improve accuracy. The results also indicate that BDS-3 provides seismic waveforms with nearly 50% better accuracy compared to BDS-2.

High-precision relocation of the aftershock sequence of the January 8, 2022, MS6.9 Menyuan earthquake

Liping Fan et al.

Summary: The 2022 Menyuan MS6.9 earthquake is the most destructive earthquake near the Lenglongling fault since 2016. The aftershocks are mainly concentrated at a depth of 7-12 km, and the aftershock sequence can be divided into two segments with different fault structures. The mainshock occurred at the conjunction of the TLS fault and LLL fault according to the surface traces and distribution of the earthquake sequence.

Near-Field Strong Ground Motions from GPS-Derived Velocities for 2020 Intermountain Western United States Earthquakes

Brendan W. Crowell

Summary: In early 2020, four moderate sized earthquakes occurred in the western United States. High-rate GPS velocity observations were found to provide good agreement with seismic recordings and ShakeMap estimations of peak ground velocity. The study highlights the utility of high-rate GPS velocity observations to strong-motion seismology.

Earthquake Magnitude Estimation from High-Rate GNSS Data: A Case Study of the 2021 Mw 7.3 Maduo Earthquake

Zhiyu Gao et al.

Summary: This study utilized high-rate GNSS data to estimate the magnitude of the 2021 Maduo earthquake in western China. Results showed that the amplitudes of displacement and velocity waveforms decreased with increasing hypocentral distance, with smaller fluctuation in PGD magnitudes over time compared to PGV. Despite slight differences, earthquake magnitudes estimated from both methods were consistent with USGS reports, highlighting the impact of the number of high-rate GNSS stations on stability and convergence time of magnitude estimation.
