Vertical Profiling of Fresh Biomass Burning Aerosol Optical Properties over the Greek Urban City of Ioannina, during the PANACEA Winter Campaign

Christina-Anna Papanikolaou et al.

Summary: This study utilized lidar technique to investigate the vertical distribution of aerosol particles in Ioannina, Greece during winter. The results showed that biomass burning activities were the main source of winter air pollution in the region. By measuring and analyzing aerosol particles, it was found that most of the aerosol layers in the lower free troposphere were fresh biomass burning particles, with wood burning being the primary contributor.

Summary: The PANACEA campaign in Greece aimed to assess aerosol presence at different heights in cities suffering from high air pollution, with Volos being one of the study sites. Different aerosol layers were characterized, with urban aerosols being the most prevalent, showing varying particle depolarization ratios.

Apportionment of black and brown carbon spectral absorption sources in the urban environment of Athens, Greece, during winter

D. G. Kaskaoutis et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spectral properties and source characteristics of absorbing aerosols in the urban background of Athens, revealing significant differences in the contribution of various components to total absorption between day and night. BrC and biomass burning aerosols showed higher contributions at shorter wavelengths, while different behaviors were observed for BCff, BrCff, BCbb, BrCbb, and BrCsec components. Sensitivity analysis supported the reliability of the results, which could have important implications for radiative transfer models.

Overview of the SLOPE I and II campaigns: aerosol properties retrieved with lidar and sun-sky photometer measurements

Jose Antonio Benavent-Oltra et al.

Summary: The Sierra Nevada Lidar aerOsol Profiling Experiment I and II campaigns aimed to determine the vertical structure of aerosols through remote sensing instruments and in situ measurements. The GRASP code was used to retrieve aerosol properties during these campaigns, showing good agreement with in situ measurements and overestimating the data by a small margin. The study demonstrates the potential of GRASP in enhancing the representation of aerosol vertical distribution and providing valuable information for satellite and global model evaluations.
