Use of NDT systems to investigate pavement reconstruction needs and improve maintenance treatment decision-making

Chunlong Xiong et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to improve the accuracy of test results and establish a maintenance treatment decision-making system using non-destructive testing technology. By determining the evaluation unit length, analyzing the test frequency and acceptance criterion of the Falling Weight Deflector (FWD) test, optimizing the test parameters of the three-dimensional Ground Penetrating Radar (3D GPR), and proposing a pavement internal damage index, a decision-making system was established. Results showed that the system can effectively guide the maintenance plan formulation for similar projects.

Sustainable design of pavement systems in highly urbanized context: A lifecycle assessment

Md. Uzzal Hossain et al.

Summary: This study uses the lifecycle assessment (LCA) technique to design and evaluate the environmental performance of commonly adopted pavement systems in a highly urbanized context, using a case study in Hong Kong. The results show that rigid pavement has higher impacts in terms of global warming potential and mineral extraction, while flexible pavement has higher impacts in terms of human health, ecosystem quality damage, and resource damage. Material production and transportation significantly contribute to the overall impact in both pavement systems. Therefore, the use of more recycled and environmentally friendly materials can enhance the environmental sustainability of pavement systems.
