Continuous monitoring of forest change dynamics with satellite time series

Mathieu Decuyper et al.

Summary: This study presents a new change detection algorithm that can accurately track deforestation and regrowth of forests using satellite data. The algorithm performs well across different forest types and change conditions, and can be used to assess carbon accumulation and forest restoration targets of secondary forests.

Detecting the attack of the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) in cotton plants with machine learning and spectral measurements

Ana Paula Marques Ramos et al.

Summary: This study proposes a framework for modeling the spectral response of cotton plants under fall armyworm attacks using machine learning algorithms. Through organizing spectral wavelengths, the Random Forest algorithm was found to be the most suitable model. The best spectral regions range from 650 to 1350 nm and 1570 to 1640 nm.

Designing a Pest and Disease Outbreak Warning System for Farmers, Agronomists and Agricultural Input Distributors in East Africa

Molly E. Brown et al.

Summary: Designing early warning systems for threats to food crops in Africa must respond to the needs of potential users of the system. This paper provides evidence from professional distributors, retailers, researchers, and agronomists in East Africa who may be able to use and communicate the results of the predictive modeling of pest outbreaks.

Integration of satellite imagery and in situ soil moisture data for estimating irrigation water requirements

S. O. Ihuoma et al.

Summary: Remote sensing images are a reliable approach for monitoring crop physiological development and estimating crop evapotranspiration and irrigation water requirements. This study compared the suitability of different remote sensing platforms for estimating crop water requirements and found that Sentinel-2 imagery was highly suitable for assessing crop canopy cover and irrigation water requirements at the field scale. The study also revealed that the field was over-irrigated, with the amount of irrigation water applied exceeding the estimated irrigation requirements.

Impact of invasive fall armyworm on plant and arthropod communities and implications for crop protection

Camilo Ayra-Pardo et al.

Summary: The fall armyworm, originally from the Western hemisphere, has become a major pest of maize in Africa, Asia, and Oceania since its invasion. Its highly polyphagous behavior and potential expansion of host range pose risks to non-crop flowering plants and their ecosystem services. Challenges in managing this exotic pest include intraguild competition, hybridization with endemic species, and documented pesticide-resistant strains.

Summary: The lack of high-quality ground truth data has been a major obstacle in applying machine learning tools to satellite data of African farms. In this study, a high-throughput method involving Kenyan youth has been developed to generate cost-effective and high-quality data in near real-time. This data is shared with the global community as a public good and is linked to other data sources to enhance our understanding of crop stress, especially in the context of climate change.
