Mapping Tidal Flats of the Bohai and Yellow Seas Using Time Series Sentinel-2 Images and Google Earth Engine

Maoxiang Chang et al.

Summary: The article introduces a new method using Sentinel-2 imagery and Google Earth Engine to generate a tidal flat map for the Bohai and Yellow Seas. The map covers a time span from October 1, 2020, to October 31, 2021, with an overall accuracy of 94.55% and a total area of 546,360.2 hectares. This updated tidal flat map can facilitate policy-making and provide insights into the responses of tidal flats to natural and human disturbance.

Combining Multispectral and Radar Imagery with Machine Learning Techniques to Map Intertidal Habitats for Migratory Shorebirds

Mohamed Henriques et al.

Summary: This study used remote sensing and machine learning techniques to map intertidal habitat types important to migratory shorebirds and their prey. The results showed that most of the intertidal flats in the Bijagos Archipelago are covered with bare sandy sediments, with 22% occupied by fiddler crabs. This has significant implications for the spatial arrangement of shorebird and benthic invertebrate communities.

Nycthemeral Movements of Wintering Shorebirds Reveal Important Differences in Habitat Uses of Feeding Areas and Roosts

C. Jourdan et al.

Summary: Research on bar-tailed godwits during wintering in France shows that they exhibit contrasting foraging behaviors and distributions between day and night, with smaller foraging home ranges at night and a preference for seagrass beds during the day. This variability in space use highlights differences in habitat selection and the importance of considering the night distribution of birds in future management and conservation efforts.

Retrieving Photometric Properties and Soil Moisture Content of Tidal Flats Using Bidirectional Spectral Reflectance

Chen Gao et al.

Summary: This study measured the multi-angle reflectance of soil samples from tidal flats, retrieved soil surface photometric characteristics using the particle swarm optimization algorithm, and calculated soil moisture content by introducing the equivalent water thickness. The results showed a significant correlation between the retrieved equivalent water thickness and soil moisture content, with high precision for estimating soil moisture. The study also found consistency between single scattering albedo values and soil moisture content, and irregular changes in roughness parameter and scattering type when soil samples were soaked with water.
