Thermal degradation of polylactic acid (PLA)/polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) blends: A systematic review

Mael Kervran et al.

Summary: This review investigates the thermal degradation behavior and mechanism of the biopolyesters polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), and categorizes and summarizes available reports on the thermal degradation of neat PLA and PHB, as well as PLA/PHB blends modified with plasticizers, additives, or crosslinkers. The study finds that the thermal stability of PLA is lower in PLA/PHB blends compared to neat PLA, while PHB exhibits higher thermal stability in PLA/PHB blends. The choice of additive greatly affects the thermal stability of PLA/PHB blends, with processing method and localization of the additive being determining factors.

Super Tough Polylactic Acid Plasticized with Epoxidized Soybean Oil Methyl Ester for Flexible Food Packaging

Arkadiusz Zych et al.

Summary: The research team developed flexible PLA materials by plasticizing them with renewable and biodegradable epoxidized soybean oil methyl ester, achieving elongations at break of nearly 800%. The lubricating effect of the plasticizer allowed for more sustainable extrusion at a low temperature of 140 degrees C, preventing PLA degradation and saving energy in the process. Plasticized films also produced less acoustic noise during handling, which is important for food packaging applications.

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/Poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA) Compatibilized Binary Biobased Blends: Melt Fluidity, Morphological, Thermo-Mechanical and Micromechanical Analysis

Laura Aliotta et al.

Summary: The study investigated PLA/PBSA biobased binary blends with different compositions of PBSA, produced by twin screw-extrusion. It was found that adding an epoxy oligomer (EO) improved the compatibility of the rubber phase with the PLA matrix. Different micromechanical responses were observed for blends with varying compositions, with EO causing a significant change in the response of certain blends.

Mengyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Biodegradable and bioabsorbable PLCL has been widely used in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, and its synthesis and structure-activity relationship need further investigation for tuning mechanical properties. Optimizing the synthesis conditions of PLCL can increase yield and enhance properties, while adjusting the monomer ratio and polymerization time can impact mechanical properties, resulting in PLCL suitable for dynamic mechanical environments.

Binary Green Blends of Poly(lactic acid) with Poly(butylene adipate-co-butylene terephthalate) and Poly(butylene succinate-co-butylene adipate) and Their Nanocomposites

Serena Coiai et al.

Summary: Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a widely produced biobased, biodegradable and biocompatible polyester. Although it shares similarities with petroleum-based polymers, its high brittleness and low toughness limit its utilization, prompting the blending with other biobased and biodegradable polymers. By incorporating appropriate additives and solid nanoparticles, the toughness and ductility of PLA can be improved, enhancing its mechanical performance, thermal stability and gas/vapor barrier properties.

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), green alternatives to petroleum-based plastics: a review

Ahmed Z. Naser et al.

Summary: Petroleum-based plastics have significant negative impacts on the environment, leading to a growing interest in alternative materials like bio-based polymers such as PLA and PHAs. The drive to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and address concerns about natural resource preservation and climate change has pushed researchers to explore the feasibility of these alternative materials. This paper provides an overview of the properties, recyclability, sustainability, and potential applications of PLA and PHAs as replacements for petroleum-based plastics.
