Experimental and Numerical Study of Adhesively and Bolted Connections of Pultruded GFRP I-Shape Profiles

Amir Reza Eskenati et al.

Summary: Recent developments indicate that the use of pultruded FRP profiles in the construction industry is growing, and studying the joints for these profiles is important. This research experimentally and numerically studied the mechanical behavior of adhesive and bolted joints for pultruded GFRP profiles. The results show that bolted flange connections increase load bearing capacity and stiffness, while adhesive connections only reach 25% of the expected shear strength. The research also provides a simplified numerical model for designing bolted joints.

Shear strengthening of reinforced concrete T-beams with anchored and non-anchored CFRP fabrics

Sakir Yazman et al.

Summary: This study investigated the strengthening of shear deficient T-beams with different CFRP configurations. Results showed that the contribution of EBR to shear capacity is significant and depended on anchorage angle and strengthening type. Among all methods, full wrapping CFRP and partial CFRP with a 45-degree anchorage type yielded the most effective results in enhancing shear capacity and stiffness while improving ductility significantly.

Behavior of CFRP-strengthened RC beams with circular web openings in shear zones: Numerical study

Yasin Onuralp Ozkilic et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of reinforced concrete beams with circular openings and the effects of strengthening them with CFRP. Various parameters such as the opening/beam height ratio, concrete compressive strength, stirrup spacing, and CFRP application type were considered in the analysis. The study identifies important parameters that affect the performance of the beams and provides recommendations for CFRP strengthening based on different conditions.

Compressive Behavior of Pultruded GFRP Boxes with Concentric Openings Strengthened by Different Composite Wrappings

Ceyhun Aksoylu et al.

Summary: This paper experimentally investigates the effect of web openings on the response of PFRP composite profiles under compressive loads. The results show that the diameter of the hole and the type of CFRP- or GFRP-strengthening method applied are important parameters. PFRP profiles with openings are able to compensate for the reduction in load-carrying capacity, but the capacity significantly drops after a certain ratio. Moreover, profiles with CFRP wrapping are more likely to improve the load-carrying capacity compared to other wrappings.

Lokman Gemi et al.

Summary: This paper presents experimental studies on the effect of FRP composite wrapping on the flexure performance of RC filled pultruded GFRP profile hybrid beams with damage analysis. The results show that the use of GFRP and CFRP composites for wrapping can significantly improve the structural performance of the beams, including maximum load-carrying capacity, initial stiffness, and ductility.

Strengthening of shear-critical reinforced concrete T-beams with anchored and non-anchored GFRP fabrics applications

Sadeq A. H. AL-Shalif et al.

Summary: This study investigated the behavioral changes of reinforced concrete T-beams with insufficient shear strength when strengthened with glass fiber reinforced polymer composites (GFRP) in different configurations. The results showed that increasing the bonding surface between GFRP and concrete prevented shear failure and GFRP strips with lower bonding surface and anchorage were more effective in terms of ductility.

Effects of high pulling speeds on mechanical properties and morphology of pultruded GFRP composite flat laminates

Alexander Vedernikov et al.

Summary: By analyzing the relationship between pulling speed, morphology, and mechanical properties of pultruded glass fiber/vinyl ester resin composites, this study demonstrates the possibility of high-speed pultrusion for large cross-section profiles suitable for structural application. The results show that higher pulling speeds lead to the presence of bubbles, voids, and cracks, but significantly increase the output without compromising mechanical performance.

Ceyhun Aksoylu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the strengthening of reinforced concrete beams with insufficient shear capacity using a novel method called Mechanical Steel Stitches (MSS). The experimental results show that increasing the strengthening ratio significantly improves the strength and energy dissipation capacity of the beams, but also leads to stiffness loss.

Strength compensation of deep beams with large web openings using carbon fiber-reinforced polymer sheets

Abbas A. Allawi et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the behavior of reinforced concrete deep beams with large web openings in shear spans strengthened by carbon fiber-reinforced polymer sheets. The results showed that the creation of openings in shear spans affects the load-carrying capacity, and strengthening with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer sheets can increase the failure load and restrict deformability of deep beams.

Review on Local Buckling of Hollow Box FRP Profiles in Civil Structural Applications

Mohammad Alhawamdeh et al.

Summary: Hollow box pultruded fibre-reinforced polymers (PFRP) profiles are increasingly popular in structural applications due to their cost-effective manufacturing process, excellent mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance. Despite their extensive usage, there is still a lack of understanding in designing against local buckling. Different cross-sectional shapes of PFRP profiles exhibit different behaviors in local buckling, with the potential to avoid local buckling in box profiles through geometric optimization. Further research is needed to address critical design parameters and interactions controlling local buckling in pulwound box FRP profiles.

Modeling Spring-In of L-Shaped Structural Profiles Pultruded at Different Pulling Speeds

Alexander Vedernikov et al.

Summary: This study successfully predicted spring-in phenomena in pultruded composite profiles through a numerical model, finding that increasing pulling speeds lead to higher levels of spring-in. The validated model demonstrated the possibility of maintaining the same level of spring-in at increased pulling speeds by using a post-die cooling tool or reducing the chemical shrinkage of the resin.
