Summary: This study presents an approach to fabricate polymer matrix composites with extraordinary mechanical performance by mimicking the hierarchical structure of limpet teeth. By utilizing magnetic field-assisted 3D printing, the geometric morphologies of microstructures can be precisely controlled. The alignment of alpha-FeOOHs in the composites was achieved through magnetic field and further enhanced by thermal treatment. The mechanical properties of the composites can be modulated by adjusting the alignment and geometric morphology of alpha-FeOOHs, leading to promising mechanical reinforcement.

Challenges and limitations of 3D printing of ECHs are identified, along with highlighting new 3D printing-based hybrid methods for selective deposition and controlled nanostructure fabrication.
