Influence of the plasticizer on rice bran-based eco-friendly bioplastics obtained by injection moulding

Maria Alonso-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: The manufacturing of eco-friendly bioplastics from renewable resources as a replacement for petroleum-based plastics has been gaining increasing attention. Rice bran, a by-product of the rice industry, is a readily available and affordable source of proteins and starches that can be used in the development of biodegradable plastics. The selection of appropriate plasticizers is essential in the production of bioplastics, especially when using mixtures of carbohydrates and proteins. In this study, the plasticizing effect of water combined with different proportions of glycerol or sorbitol was analyzed, along with their impact on the final properties of the bioplastics. The results showed that higher water ratios resulted in stiffer bioplastics with improved mechanical properties, while increasing the content of glycerol or sorbitol led to increased elasticity and water uptake capacity. Sorbitol was found to be more suitable for achieving better tensile and functional properties compared to glycerol.

Polyhydroxybutyrate blends: A solution for biodegradable packaging?

Marius Stelian Popa et al.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive overview of the preparation, properties, and application of Poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) blends with other biodegradable polymers. The focus is on the compatibility of PHB with other polymers and the methods used to improve dispersion and interface. The changes in PHB morphology, thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties induced by the second polymer are critically analyzed. The review also summarizes the biodegradability and recyclability strategies of PHB blends, along with the processing techniques adapted to the intended application.

Arkadiusz Zarski et al.

Summary: Starch, the second most abundantly available natural polymer in the world, is attractive for its biodegradability and non-toxicity, making it a popular raw material in food and non-food industries. However, due to its high hydrophilicity, complex processing operations are required, particularly in the packaging industry. With increasing awareness of the dangers of non-degradable petroleum polymers, there is a growing industry focusing on processing biodegradable materials for packaging purposes.
