Self-attraction and loading feedback on ocean dynamics in both shallow water equations and primitive equations

Linus Shihora et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that explicit treatment of self-attraction and loading effects is more favorable for M2 tidal dynamics and general circulation models compared to scalar approximations. The ocean bottom pressure is influenced by about 1 hPa in coastal areas for short time periods, and about 0.5 hPa in resonant basins in the southern ocean for longer periods. The study also shows that surface pressure anomalies over continents have an influence of about 0.5 hPa along the coasts in the computation of self-attraction and loading effects.

Along-Orbit Analysis of GRACE Follow-On Inter-Satellite Laser Ranging Measurements for Sub-Monthly Surface Mass Variations

Khosro Ghobadi-Far et al.

Summary: This article examines the sensitivity of GRACE-FO LRI measurements to sub-monthly time-variable gravity signals and presents an alternative analysis method for studying short-term mass changes. By combining the LRI observations with other data and models, high-frequency oceanic mass variability and sub-monthly variations in surface water can be detected.

Non-Tidal Background Modeling for Satellite Gravimetry Based on Operational ECWMF and ERA5 Reanalysis Data: AOD1B RL07

Linus Shihora et al.

Summary: The Atmosphere and Ocean De-Aliasing Level-1B (AOD1B) product provides background information on non-tidal high-frequency mass changes in the atmosphere and oceans. Three new datasets are presented here, which improve over previous versions and show overall improvement in representing high-frequency mass changes. The potential benefits of enhancing the temporal resolution remain inconclusive, and the upcoming release will be sampled every 3 hours.

Comparison of Convective Parameters Derived from ERA5 and MERRA-2 with Rawinsonde Data over Europe and North America

Mateusz Taszarek et al.

Summary: This study compared rawinsonde observations with reanalysis data to examine the depiction of convective parameters. The results show that while reanalysis performs well in certain aspects, there are also underestimations and overestimations present. Both reanalyses underestimate CAPE and CIN, with better reliability observed at lower elevation stations.

Summary: This study compared eleven different precipitation datasets and found that ERA5 and ERA5-Land are significant improvements over other reanalysis datasets, showing better agreement with observations. However, ERA5 underestimates low precipitation rates in the tropics.

High-Resolution Numerical Modeling of Barotropic Global Ocean Tides for Satellite Gravimetry

R. Sulzbach et al.

Summary: The upgraded tidal model TiME accurately simulates ocean tides and demonstrates high accuracy in the open ocean, but reduced accuracy in shallow and coastal waters. The model setting allows for simulation of tides recurring once or twice per day, especially suited for studying minor tides. Solutions from TiME, free of data constraints, show increased accuracy compared to empirically motivated estimates of minor tides commonly used for satellite data de-aliasing.

Evaluation of Hourly PWV Products Derived From ERA5 and MERRA-2 Over the Tibetan Plateau Using Ground-Based GNSS Observations by Two Enhanced Models

Liangke Huang et al.

Summary: This study systematically assessed the hourly PWV values derived from ERA5 and MERRA-2 by comparing them with 33 GNSS stations over the Tibetan Plateau from 2017 to 2018. It was found that ERA5 had slightly higher accuracy compared to MERRA-2, possibly due to its higher spatial resolution.
