Continuities in maternal substance use from early adolescence to parenthood: findings from the intergenerational cohort consortium

Kimberly C. Thomson et al.

Summary: This study found that women who frequently binge drink, smoke tobacco, and use cannabis during adolescence and young adulthood are more likely to continue using these substances during pregnancy and after giving birth. It emphasizes the importance of taking action to reduce substance use during the perinatal period well before pregnancy, starting in adolescence and continuing throughout the preconception years and perinatal period.

Predictors of alcohol use during pregnancy in Australian women

Tracey W. Tsang et al.

Interventions to promote behavior change regarding alcohol consumption during pregnancy are warranted to ensure the intended benefit of guidelines.

Cohort profile: early school years follow-up of the Asking Questions about Alcohol in Pregnancy Longitudinal Study in Melbourne, Australia (AQUA at 6)

Evelyne Muggli et al.

Summary: The AQUA study aims to assess the impact of low to moderate prenatal alcohol exposure and sporadic binge drinking on long-term child development. Current findings suggest some associations, but at 2 years of age, there was no evidence of cognitive, language, or motor developmental delays related to alcohol exposure. Future plans include investigating neurodevelopmental aspects at 6-8 years and exploring the role of genetics and epigenetics in outcomes.

Early life environmental factors associated with autism spectrum disorder symptoms in children at age 2 years: A birth cohort study

Cindy Pham et al.

Summary: Mounting evidence suggests that early life environmental factors increase the likelihood of autism spectrum disorder. This study found that autism spectrum disorder symptoms at the age of 2 strongly predicted diagnosis by the age of 4. Factors such as lower household income, lone parental status, younger maternal age, maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index, higher gestational weight gain, prenatal maternal stress, prenatal alcohol, environmental air pollutant exposures, secondhand tobacco smoke exposure, dampness/mould, and home heating with oil, kerosene or diesel heaters were associated with autism spectrum disorder symptoms.

Summary: The study found that there is a high degree of continuity between binge drinking behaviors in adolescence and young adulthood and periconception alcohol use, indicating that women with a history of frequent or binge drinking are more likely to engage in risky drinking behaviors in early pregnancy.

Summary: The study found that poor maternal physical and mental health during or up to 15 months after childbirth was associated with adverse health outcomes for their offspring, including poor general health, presence of chronic health conditions, and lower physical health scores. Additionally, the presence of a chronic condition in mothers during pregnancy significantly increased the likelihood of their offspring having a chronic condition in infancy and adolescence. Stressful life events and mental health issues in mothers were also found to impact the health of their children during adolescence and infancy, respectively.
