Microplastics as carriers of inorganic and organic contaminants in the environment: A review of recent progress

Vasiliki Kinigopoulou et al.

Summary: Microplastics, widely present in the environment, pose a global threat and can contaminate water, soil, and air, impacting ecosystems and human health. As carriers of contaminants, microplastics can transport organic and inorganic emerging contaminants and affect their adsorption and transport. Understanding the kinetics and mechanisms of adsorption is crucial for studying these interactions.

Microplastics act as vectors for antibiotic resistance genes in landfill leachate: The enhanced roles of the long-term aging process

Yinglong Su et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the aging process significantly altered the surface properties of MPs, increasing specific surface areas, forming oxygen-containing groups, and changing surface morphology, which further enhanced microbial colonization. The bacterial community on MPs showed higher biofilm-forming and pathogenic potential compared to leachate. Results also indicated selective enrichment of ARGs on MPs, with an enhancement in enrichment potential during the aging process. Co-occurrence networks suggested the presence of non-random, closer, and more stable ARGs-bacterial taxa relations on MP surface, influencing ARG transmission.

Landfill microbiome harbour plastic degrading genes: A metagenomic study of solid waste dumping site of Gujarat, India

Raghawendra Kumar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bacterial community structure and functional potential in a landfill site, revealing the presence of plastic degrading capabilities. The dominant phyla in soil and compost samples were Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria, while in leachate samples, Firmicutes and Actinobacteria were predominant. The study also identified potential genes associated with the biodegradation of different types of plastics like polyethylene, polyethyl-ene terephthalate, and polystyrene.

Occurrence of bisphenol A and microplastics in landfill leachate: lessons from South East Europe

Aleksandra C. Narevski et al.

Summary: The investigation of landfills in Southeast Europe revealed the presence of microplastics in different sizes, shapes, and colors, as well as detectable levels of BPA in landfill leachate samples. The average concentration values of microplastics ranged from 0.64 to 2.16 mg L-1, while the average concentration of BPA in leachate samples ranged from 0.70 to 2.72 mg L-1, showing a correlation with the content of microplastics.
