Temporal-spatial variations of vegetation cover and surface soil moisture in the growing season across the mountain-oasis-desert system in Xinjiang, China

Liu Yang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the temporal-spatial variations of surface soil moisture and vegetation cover in the mountain-oasis-desert coupling system in Xinjiang from 1986 to 2015. The results showed an increase in soil moisture and a decrease in vegetation cover. Precipitation was found to be an important supplement source for soil moisture, while different regions showed varying responses of vegetation to precipitation and temperature, with deserts and oases being more sensitive to precipitation and mountainous regions being more sensitive to temperature.

Change and attribution of pan evaporation throughout the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau during 1979-2017 using China meteorological forcing dataset

Tianci Yao et al.

Summary: Pan evaporation analysis in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) using the PenPan model showed agreement with observations, indicating high evaporation in areas with water limitation or strong solar radiation. A widespread decrease in evaporation around 1993 was observed, with exceptions like the continuous increase in the southwest QTP. After 1993, annual evaporation trends accelerated in both the QTP and surrounding areas, with different factors influencing evaporation before and after 1993.

Observed Changes of Koppen Climate Zones Based on High-Resolution Data Sets in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Yanlong Guan et al.

Summary: This study quantified changes in climate zones on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau over the past 50 years, showing a significant decrease in highland climate and its replacement by boreal climate. The rise in temperature has led to a gradual shift in the spatial distribution of highland tundra climate to boreal climate, with distinct elevation characteristics. Additionally, both boreal and highland climate types are showing a trend towards warm and humid climates, potentially providing more suitable conditions for species diversity.

Spatial and Temporal Differences in Alpine Meadow, Alpine Steppe and All Vegetation of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and Their Responses to Climate Change

Hanchen Duan et al.

Summary: The study reveals significant differences in alpine meadow, alpine steppe, and overall vegetation of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in terms of growing season length, NDVI growth trends, vegetation improvement, and degradation. The responses to climatic factors exhibit significant spatial heterogeneity across the plateau.

Time-lag effects of NDVI responses to climate change in the Yamzhog Yumco Basin, South Tibet

Meng Zhe et al.

Summary: The study focused on vegetation dynamics and their response to climate change in the Yamzhog Yumco Basin from 2000 to 2018. The results showed an increasing trend in NDVI, with temperature being the primary driving factor. Future grassland conservation projects need to consider the time-lag effects on vegetation dynamics.

Effect of Ecological Construction Engineering on Vegetation Restoration: A Case Study of the Loess Plateau

Lina Xiu et al.

Summary: In the Loess Plateau region, significant progress has been made in vegetation restoration through the implementation of ecological engineering, leading to a substantial recovery in vegetation quality. However, with the large-scale implementation of ecological restoration, urban areas in the region continue to expand.

Quantifying spatiotemporal variations in soil moisture driven by vegetation restoration on the Loess Plateau of China

Linjing Qiu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of vegetation restoration on soil moisture dynamics on the Loess Plateau of China using earth system reanalysis data and the Community Land Model (CLM). Results showed that while the surface layer soil moisture responded positively to vegetation restoration, the subsurface and deeper soil layers had negative responses. Overall, there was a decreasing trend in soil moisture during the simulation period, with significant differences observed spatially and seasonally.

Impact of thermal condition on vegetation feedback under greening trend of China

Yuxuan Xue et al.

Summary: In China, a clear greening trend was observed over the past three decades, with most of the vegetation feedback on land surface temperature being negative. There is an inverse relationship between vegetation feedback and thermal conditions among temperature zones, and the expansion of grassland may temporarily lead to positive vegetation feedback.

Grassland ecological compensation policy in China improves grassland quality and increases herders' income

Lingling Hou et al.

Summary: This study examines the effects of Grassland Ecological Compensation Policy (GECP) on grassland quality and herder income, finding that while it improves grassland quality and increases herder income, it also exacerbates income inequality among herders. The program has induced changes in livestock production behavior, highlighting the importance of flexibility and adaptation to local resource circumstances in such programs.

Greening of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Its Response to Climate Variations along Elevation Gradients

Zhaoqi Wang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that vegetation on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has been greening in the past fifteen years, primarily influenced by increasing temperature and radiation, while drought may cause vegetation browning. The correlation between vegetation greenness and climate varies at different altitudes, and changes in the Northwestern QTP require special attention.
