Modeling Forest Canopy Cover: A Synergistic Use of Sentinel-2, Aerial Photogrammetry Data, and Machine Learning

Vahid Nasiri et al.

Summary: This study successfully modeled forest canopy cover in the Hyrcanian mixed temperate forest in Northern Iran using a combination of Sentinel-2 data, high-resolution aerial images, and machine learning algorithms. The results showed that vegetation indices were the most important predictors in the models, and the random forest algorithm performed the best while the elastic net algorithm performed the worst in terms of model performance.

3D point cloud fusion from UAV and TLS to assess temperate managed forest structures

Dimitrios Panagiotidis et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of UAV-LS and TLS data in accurately estimating forest tree metrics under differing management types and tested whether fusion can improve the mapping of the 3D structure of individual trees. The results showed that LiDAR fusion increased the estimation accuracy of tree metrics and reshaped the modeled crown structures, leading to improved estimates for all crown metrics.

An Evaluation of the Effects of UAS Flight Parameters on Digital Aerial Photogrammetry Processing and Dense-Cloud Production Quality in a Scots Pine Forest

Raul Sampaio de Lima et al.

Summary: The study assessed the impact of flying altitude and lateral, longitudinal overlaps on digital aerial photogrammetry processing, highlighting the importance of specific flight settings in influencing data quality. The optimal combination of flight settings includes 90% lateral overlap, 70% longitudinal overlap, and a minimum altitude of 120 m, demonstrating benefits for comprehensive forest scene reconstruction.

Influence of flight parameters on UAS-based monitoring of tree height, diameter, and density

Neal C. Swayze et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of unmanned aerial system (UAS) imagery for modeling individual tree and stand-level metrics in dry conifer forests. It found that tree extraction accuracy was maximized for nadir crosshatch UAS flight designs, while extracted tree height accuracy was high for all UAS flight parameters. Additionally, stand density estimates were most accurate with off-nadir or crosshatch flight designs at lower altitudes.

Comparison of Coniferous Plantation Heights Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Laser Scanning and Stereo Photogrammetry

Mei Li et al.

Summary: By using ULS and USP data, four kinds of stand heights in plantation forests were estimated using different models. The prediction accuracy of stand heights using USP was comparable to ULS, with Lorey's height having the highest accuracy. The correlation between metrics from ULS and USP increased with height, and canopy height model-based metrics performed slightly better than normalized point cloud-based metrics.

Impact of Base-to-Height Ratio on Canopy Height Estimation Accuracy of Hemiboreal Forest Tree Species by Using Satellite and Airborne Stereo Imagery

Grigorijs Goldbergs

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of large-format airborne and satellite image-based DSMs for canopy height estimation in Latvian hemiboreal forestland and found a tendency for canopy height underestimation in satellite-based models. Accuracy of GeoEye1-based models varied for different tree species, with the optimal B/H ratio range for image-based DSMs in closed-canopy hemiboreal forest areas identified as 0.2-0.3.

Summary: This study introduces an approach to monitor tree structure parameters and damage using remote-sensing data collected by UAV for forest management. The proposed method utilizes ITCD algorithm for tree species classification and assessment of forest stands, demonstrating high accuracy in crown contouring and pixel-by-pixel classification. The advantage lies in combined processing of multispectral and RGB photo images.
