Temperature Across Vegetation Canopy-Water-Soil Interfaces Is Modulated by Hydroperiod and Extreme Weather in Coastal Wetlands

Xiaochen Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated temperature differences in the mangrove-saltmarsh ecotones in coastal areas of Louisiana and Florida. The results showed that the canopy played a buffering role in temperature changes, while inundation depth did not affect soil temperature. The interaction between frequency and duration of inundation modulated soil temperature, and extreme weather events influenced canopy buffering. These findings highlight the importance of measuring the interaction between ecological and climatic processes in coastal areas.

Current global efforts are insufficient to limit warming to 1.5°C

H. Damon Matthews et al.

Summary: Human activities have led to a global temperature increase, and current trends suggest that we will exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius in less than 10 years. Overcoming inertia in political and technological systems is the primary obstacle to achieving the 1.5 degrees Celsius goal. Political and corporate leadership, along with increased societal recognition, are necessary for system-level and individual lifestyle changes.

Predicting mangrove forest dynamics across a soil salinity gradient using an individual-based vegetation model linked with plant hydraulics

Masaya Yoshikai et al.

Summary: Soil salinity is an important environmental factor in mangrove forests, affecting productivity and tree competition. This study developed a model incorporating plant hydraulics to investigate the growth characteristics of mangroves under salt stress. The model predictions aligned with field data, highlighting the influence of salinity on mangrove forest structures.

Modelling mangrove forest structure and species composition over tidal inundation gradients: The feedback between plant water use and porewater salinity in an arid mangrove ecosystem

Jasper Bathmann et al.

Summary: This study assessed the importance of feedback between water availability and plant water use in mangrove ecosystems using the Mangrove Model MANGA. The inclusion of tree water use in the model led to high similarity between model results and field observations. The feedback between tree water use and porewater salinity was shown to be important for the emergence of species zonation patterns in mangrove forests.

Evaluating a Steady-State Model of Soil Accretion in Everglades Mangroves (Florida, USA)

Randolph M. Chambers et al.

Summary: The study modeled the limits to vertical soil accretion in riverine mangrove forests in Florida and found that the rates of accretion were lower than sea level rise estimates. Despite this, mangroves in the study region have not drowned, indicating other factors may be contributing to soil accretion deficits. The potential positive impacts of hurricanes on soil accretion were highlighted in regions with high disturbance frequency such as the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean region.

Hydroperiod and Salinity Interactions Control Mangrove Root Dynamics in a Karstic Oceanic Island in the Caribbean Sea (San Andres, Colombia)

Jairo Humberto Medina-Calderon et al.

Summary: The study found that root production in mangroves on San Andres Island is controlled by soil stress conditions rather than nutrient availability, as seen in other karstic environments. Under low flooding duration, low salinity, and sulfide concentrations, the lowest root biomass allocation and production were observed. However, under high flooding duration and low oxygen conditions, root tissues reached the highest biomass and production values.

Summary: Mangrove wetlands have diverse tree communities spanning broad geographical gradients. The study found that factors such as latitudinal variation, allometric scaling relationships, and species composition do not significantly impact mangrove forest structure and biomass allocation. Regional climate and hydroperiod play a greater role in controlling biomass accumulation across global geographical gradients.

Drought-Induced Salinity Enhancement Weakens Mangrove Greennouse Gas Cycling

Xudong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study confirms that estuarine mangroves play a significant role in both absorbing carbon dioxide and emitting methane, with the warming effect of methane emissions potentially offsetting the cooling effect of carbon dioxide uptake. The lack of long-term continuous measurements has led to uncertainties in understanding the climate offset caused by these greenhouse gas fluxes. Drought-induced salinity enhancement weakened the greenhouse gas cycling of mangroves, reducing both the carbon dioxide sink and methane source.
