Microglial activation and tau propagate jointly across Braak stages

Tharick A. Pascoal et al.

Summary: The study found a correlation between microglial activation and tau accumulation in patients with Alzheimer's disease, following a Braak-like pattern. The co-occurrence of A β, tau, and microglial abnormalities was identified as the strongest predictor of cognitive impairment in the study population.

Computational modeling of tau pathology spread reveals patterns of regional vulnerability and the impact of a genetic risk factor

Eli J. Cornblath et al.

Summary: This study found that diffusion through the connectome is the best predictor of tau pathology patterns, and deviations from pure neuroanatomical spread were used to estimate regional vulnerability to tau pathology while identifying related gene expression patterns. Furthermore, alterations in pathology spread were observed in mice harboring a mutation in leucine-rich repeat kinase 2, with a preferential retrograde direction of spread. This study offers a framework for understanding neuropathological progression in tauopathies.
