Revisiting Total Particle Number Measurements for Vehicle Exhaust Regulations

Barouch Giechaskiel et al.

Summary: This article discusses the importance of introducing a new metric for effective regulation of vehicle emissions, namely total particles which include solid and volatile particles. It highlights the contribution of road transport to particle number concentration levels in cities and presents emission levels of solid and total particles from modern vehicles. The health effects of solid and volatile particles are briefly discussed. The article also emphasizes the need for an appropriate methodology to achieve representative and reproducible results in monitoring vehicle emissions according to the new metric.

Emissions of carboxylic acids, hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and isocyanic acid (HNCO) from vehicle exhaust

Tiange Li et al.

Summary: The study found that emission factors of carboxylic acids are significantly higher in diesel vehicles compared to gasoline vehicles, with formic acid being a major component. The emission factors of toxic species HCN and HNCO were also quantified. Primary emissions from vehicles were shown to contribute significantly to organic acids in urban environments.

More mileage in reducing urban air pollution from road traffic

Roy M. Harrison et al.

Summary: Road traffic emissions are a major contributor to urban air pollution, with strict controls in European cities and Beijing. However, roadside sites may still exceed WHO guidelines. Further measures, such as transitioning to a battery-electric fleet, are necessary to reduce emissions and improve air quality in different cities.

Technical note: Emission factors, chemical composition, and morphology of particles emitted from Euro 5 diesel and gasoline light-duty vehicles during transient cycles

Evangelia Kostenidou et al.

Summary: Changes in engine technologies and after-treatment devices can significantly impact the chemical composition of emitted pollutants, as shown in this study characterizing particles emitted by diesel and gasoline vehicles tested at a chassis dynamometer facility. The investigation revealed the largest fraction of emissions during cold-start cycles, and the identification of over 40 PAHs in exhaust particles using a high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometer highlighted differences in emission levels between vehicle types.
