Animal board invited review: Animal source foods in healthy sustainable, and ethical diets - An argument against drastic limitation of livestock in the food system ,

Frederic Leroy et al.

Summary: Animal source foods are evolutionarily appropriate for humans, providing essential nutrients for development and function. However, debates exist regarding their health and environmental impacts, which vary based on cultural contexts and management practices. Well-managed livestock farming can contribute to ecosystem and soil health, while providing high-quality food through resource upcycling. However, mitigation is required to address negative impacts associated with certain production methods.

Global, regional, and national burdens of common micronutrient deficiencies from 1990 to 2019: A secondary trend analysis based on the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study

Xu Han et al.

Summary: This study analyzed data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 study to investigate trends in common micronutrient deficiencies from 1990 to 2019. The results showed a decrease in the prevalence rates of iodine deficiency, vitamin A deficiency, and dietary iron deficiency globally. The study also highlighted the higher burden of micronutrient deficiencies in low-social demographic index (SDI) countries. Policy makers can use these findings to implement cost-effective interventions, especially in low-SDI and low-healthcare access and quality (HAQ) index countries.

Affordability of nutritious foods for complementary feeding in Eastern and Southern Africa

Theresa Ryckman et al.

Summary: The study concludes that many families are still struggling with high food prices and inadequate nutrition, especially for key nutrients. While vitamin A is more accessible in some countries, sources of iron, animal protein, and calcium are not easily affordable. It is important to find ways to reduce the prices of essential nutrients and improve household access to nutritious foods.

The global burden of chronic and hidden hunger revisited: New panel data evidence spanning 1990? 2017

Bert Lenaerts et al.

Summary: The study found that hidden hunger is more prevalent than chronic hunger, and the supply of cereals and vegetables and fruits are crucial in reducing the burden of hunger. Gender equality only affects hidden hunger. Additionally, the spatial spillover effects of GDP on the burden of hunger are also important factors.

Review: Trends for meat, milk and egg consumption for the next decades and the role played by livestock systems in the global production of proteins

M. Henchion et al.

Summary: This study examines trends in animal-sourced foods since 2000 and projects future demand for animal-sourced protein. Variations in demand for animal versus plant-sourced protein and consumption levels across different regions are identified. The study highlights the importance of regional-specific strategies to address the challenge of sustainable livestock production and consumption.
