Impact of nanoparticles on the environmental sustainability of polymer nanocomposites based on bioplastics or recycled plastics-A review of life-cycle assessment studies

Sabrina C. Carroccio et al.

Summary: Adding nanoparticles to a host polymer can improve fiber performance and have environmental benefits. However, the environmental impact of nanoparticles needs to be evaluated through life-cycle assessment studies. While the production of nanoparticles may emit significant amounts of greenhouse gases and require high energy, increasing their content or functionalizing them can result in environmental benefits.

Comparative Reinforcement Effect of Achatina fulica Snail Shell Nanoparticles, Montmorillonite, and Kaolinite Nanoclay on the Mechanical and Physical Properties of Greenpoxy Biocomposite

Oluwatoyin Joseph Gbadeyan et al.

Summary: This study compared the reinforcing effects of Achatina fulica snail shell nanoparticles, montmorillonite, and kaolinite nanoclay on greenpoxy. The incorporation of snail shell nanoparticles significantly improved the mechanical properties of pure greenpoxy, with 1% loading offering the best results. The protein fibers and high-concentration calcium carbonate in snail shell nanoparticles contributed to a uniform dispersion and strong adhesion with the matrix, resulting in high strength, stiffness, and reduced water absorption of the composites.

Amylose/cellulose nanofiber composites for all-natural, fully biodegradable and flexible bioplastics

Jinchuan Xu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that blending cellulose nanofibers (CNF) into pure amylose (AM) matrix significantly enhances crystallinity, mechanical properties, and permeability, while glycerol can increase elongation at break. There is significant phase separation between AM and CNF in the nanocomposites. The dynamic plasticizing and anti-plasticizing effects of CNF and glycerol are demonstrated by NMR analysis, indicating high molecular order and evenly distributed glycerol domains.

Corn starch/PVA bioplastics-The properties and biodegradability study using Chlorella vulgaris cultivation

Rowen Lim et al.

Summary: The study explored a biodegradable alternative to synthetic plastics made from gelatinized corn starch and polyvinyl alcohol, finding that PVA increased the solubility of the film while starch had a better water absorption ability. Experiments showed that Chlorella vulgaris preferred PVA as a substrate, indicating its potential as a candidate for breaking down the bioplastic films.

Bio-sorption of a bi-solute system of copper and lead ions onto banana peels: characterization and optimization

Felicia O. Afolabi et al.

Summary: Banana peel was used as a low-cost adsorbent for the removal of Cu and Pb ions in a binary system. The optimized conditions for bio-sorption of Cu and Pb had a high removal efficiency, with Pb showing higher bio-sorption capacity than Cu. The regression model and agreement between experimental and predicted values confirmed the validity of using banana peels for bio-sorption of Cu and Pb.

Properties and Characterization of Lignin Nanoparticles Functionalized in Macroalgae Biopolymer Films

Samsul Rizal et al.

Summary: The demand for bioplastic material is increasing, but moisture absorption and low mechanical strength limit its commercial applications. Macroalgae face the same challenges, but in this study, lignin nanoparticles were used to reinforce Kappaphycus alvarezii macroalgae. Both purified and unpurified LNPs significantly improved the functional properties of the bioplastic films, with purified LNPs showing a greater reinforcement effect on the macroalgae.

Summary: The study found that loading banana fiber can improve the mechanical properties of the biocomposite, but has a negative impact on temperature-dependent properties. The loading of nano-CaCO3 can enhance the performance of banana-filled biocomposites, with the hybrid composite containing 2wt% showing superior properties.Uniform dispersion and strong adhesion between the matrix/nano-CaCO3/banana fiber contribute to the improved mechanical and temperature-dependent properties.

Augmentation of physico-mechanical, thermal and biodegradability performances of bio-precipitated material reinforced in Eucheuma cottonii biopolymer films

Indra Surya et al.

Summary: Green reinforcement in biopolymer is increasing for enhanced industrial application. Bio-precipitated CaCO3 was synthesized using Bacillus sp. strain. The properties of Eucheuma cottonii film with B-PCC and C-PCC reinforcement were analyzed and compared. The biocomposite films exhibited better water barriers and hydrophobicity with 0.1% B-PCC, but slightly lower mechanical strength and thermal stability compared to C-PCC. E. cottonii biocomposite films, especially with 0.1 wt. % B-PCC, showed potential in agricultural mulch film by promoting better biodegradation and tensile strength, making them a promising alternative to traditional plastics for mitigating plastic pollution.

The investigation of reinforcement properties of nano-CaCO3 synthesized from Achatina fulica snail shell through mechanochemical methods on epoxy nanocomposites

O. J. Gbadeyan et al.

Summary: The study examined the reinforcement properties of nano-CaCO3 synthesized from Achatina fulica snail shell, finding significant improvements in thermal stability and mechanical properties of neat epoxy with different filler content. Notably, inclusion of 1% Achatina fulica snail shell nanoparticles led to a 75% increase in tensile strength, over 25% increase in stiffness, 25% increase in impact strength, and 35% increase in hardness of neat epoxy. These findings highlight the potential of nano-CaCO3 from A. fulica snail shell for nanocomposite fabrication.
