Groundwater geochemistry, quality, and pollution of the largest lake basin in the Middle East: Comparison of PMF and PCA-MLR receptor models and application of the source-oriented HHRA approach

Hamed Haghnazar et al.

Summary: The study revealed high levels of groundwater pollution in the eastern part of Lake Urmia basin, mainly influenced by lake water infiltration, solid waste leachates, industrial-municipal wastewaters, and vehicular emissions. Human health risk assessment identified potential non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks associated with Pb and Cr.

Ecological risk of heavy metals in lake sediments of China: A national-scale integrated analysis

Dianpeng Li et al.

Summary: Intensive anthropogenic activities, specifically, industrial and agricultural production, have led to the accumulation of heavy metals in lake sediment, posing threats to aquatic ecosystems and human health. Evaluating the potential ecological risk of heavy metals in lake sediment is crucial for effective lake management. However, large-scale risk evaluations of heavy metal pollution in lake sediment are lacking in densely populated countries like China. This study compiled data from 190 lakes across five geographic zones in China and evaluated the ecological risk and sources of heavy metals in lake sediment, providing valuable insights for policy formulation and lake restoration.

Spatial distribution, source identification and ecological risk assessment of POPs and heavy metals in lake sediments of Istanbul, Turkey

Baris Guzel et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze organic pollutants and heavy metals in surface sediments from water reservoirs supplying Istanbul, as well as possible sources of contamination. The dominant organic pollutants were PAHs, and polluted sediments were likely sourced from village-town settlements near the dam and highway.

Assessment of spatial distribution of sediment contamination with heavy metals in the two biggest rivers in Poland

Joanna Jaskula et al.

Summary: This study investigates the contamination of six heavy metals in the river sediments of Poland's two largest rivers, the Oder and Vistula. It provides insights into the overall characteristics, spatial distribution, pollution levels, and possible sources of heavy metals in the country. The study also assesses the potential toxic effects of the sediments and identifies the main factors influencing the distribution of heavy metals in the river sediments.

Comprehensive assessment of heavy metal pollution and ecological risk in lake sediment by combining total concentration and chemical partitioning

Zhenzhen Yu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the bioavailability, pollution, and eco-risk of heavy metals in surface sediments of Erhai Lake, with results indicating that BCR extraction is more efficient compared to HCl extraction. Cd was found to be the most polluted element, while Cr, Cu, and Ni were mainly natural in origin, and Cd, Pb, and Zn existed in both bioavailable and residue forms. Various assessment indices showed inconsistent eco-risks for different metals, highlighting the importance of integrating multiple indices in metal pollution and eco-risk assessments.

Potentially toxic elements contamination in surface sediment and indigenous aquatic macrophytes of the Bahmanshir River, Iran: Appraisal of phytoremediation capability

Hamed Haghnazar et al.

Summary: The study in Bahmanshir River of Iran revealed that sediment contamination was primarily caused by municipal wastewater/vehicular pollution, with contributions from weathering/industrial/agricultural activities. Moderate pollution levels for Pb and Cu were indicated, along with low to moderate contamination and toxicity overall. Typha latifolia L. demonstrated good phytostabilization capability for Cd, Cu, and Pb, and phytoextraction capacity for Zn, making it a potential candidate for bioaccumulation in the study area.

Sediment Heavy Metal Contents, Ostracod Toxicity and Risk Assessment in Tropical Freshwater Lakes, Tamil Nadu, India

Periyasamy Sivalingam et al.

Summary: Coimbatore, an industrial city in Tamil Nadu, India, is experiencing rapid urbanization and population growth. Heavy metal levels in aquatic environments are limited in the area. This study found that metal concentrations in urban lakes were exceeding safety guidelines and had higher ecotoxicity compared to countryside lakes. The sources of heavy metals differed significantly between urban and country lakes.
