Automated Brain Masking of Fetal Functional MRI with Open Data

Saige Rutherford et al.

Summary: By training a Convolutional Neural Network on manually traced fetal fMRI images, the authors were able to accurately isolate the fetal brain from surrounding tissue across non-stationary 3D brain volumes. They achieved excellent performance on two separate test sets and provided insights into their adaptation of each preprocessing step, representing a significant advancement towards an open-source workflow for fetal functional MRI data preprocessing.

Patterns of Infant Amygdala Connectivity Mediate the Impact of High Caregiver Affect on Reducing Infant Smiling: Discovery and Replication

Mary L. Phillips et al.

Summary: This research used resting-state functional connectivity to measure the impact of caregiver postpartum depression and anxiety on early infant positive and negative emotionality. The study found that greater connectivity between the amygdala and specific neural networks mediated this association. These early neural markers can help identify infants at risk of negative effects from caregiver depression and anxiety.

Towards a Data-Driven Approach to Screen for Autism Risk at 12 Months of Age

Shoba S. Meera et al.

Summary: This study developed a classifier for assessing autism risk in infants at 12 months of age based on a parent-report measure, showing promising sensitivity and specificity for identifying high-risk infants. The findings highlight the potential benefits of combining parent-report measures with machine learning approaches for early autism risk screening.

Construct validity of the First-Year Inventory (FYI Version 2.0) in 12-month-olds at high-risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder

Helen Y. Lee et al.

Summary: This study explores the construct validity of the First-Year Inventory 2.0 compared to other established instruments in a sample of high-risk infant siblings of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The findings suggest that the Social-Communication domain of the First-Year Inventory 2.0 has stronger associations with other instruments compared to the Sensory-Regulatory domain. Researchers and clinicians are encouraged to utilize a variety of instruments for a comprehensive evaluation of a child.
