Novel protein markers of androgen activity in humans: proteomic study of plasma from young chemically castrated men

Aleksander Giwercman et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify new protein biomarkers of testosterone activity and assess their predictive value in relation to testosterone levels and androgen deficiency-related pathologies. Through mass spectrometry analysis, 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (4HPPD), insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 6 (IGFBP6), and fructose-bisphosphate aldolase (ALDOB), as well as a Multi Marker Algorithm based on levels of 4HPPD and IGFBP6, were identified as the most accurate predictors of low testosterone levels. They were also found to be more strongly associated with metabolic syndrome and diabetes compared to testosterone levels. Further investigations are needed to determine the clinical potential of these biomarkers.

Benefits and Risks of Testosterone Treatment in Men with Age-Related Decline in Testosterone

Marcelo Rodrigues dos Santos et al.

Summary: The increase in life expectancy for men has drawn attention to quality-of-life issues related to reproductive aging. Testosterone levels decline with age and can be improved with treatment, although long-term effects on major cardiovascular events and prostate cancer risk remain unclear.

Short-Term Effect of Induced Alterations in Testosterone Levels on Fasting Plasma Amino Acid Levels in Healthy Young Men

K. Barbara Sahlin et al.

Summary: Long term testosterone deficiency has negative effects on metabolism, muscle degradation, and metabolic diseases, while short-term testosterone changes seem to impact amino acid levels, with an association between tyrosine and phenylalanine levels and testosterone changes. The study suggests that fasting amino acid levels can be used to monitor early metabolic changes induced by testosterone fluctuations.

MetaboAnalyst 5.0: narrowing the gap between raw spectra and functional insights

Zhiqiang Pang et al.

Summary: MetaboAnalyst version 5.0 has been introduced to facilitate comprehensive metabolomics data analysis and interpretation, with the aim of narrowing the gap from raw data to functional insights. Three new modules have been developed to assist in this goal, along with various other new functions and improvements in interface, graphics, and codebase. Users can now easily switch between compatible modules for a streamlined data analysis experience.

Establishment of sex difference in circulating uric acid is associated with higher testosterone and lower sex hormone-binding globulin in adolescent boys

Yutang Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that men have higher circulating levels of uric acid than women, but estradiol does not have a negative impact on uric acid. The sex difference in uric acid during adolescence is due to a dramatic increase in uric acid in adolescent boys, who have higher testosterone levels and lower sex hormone-binding globulin levels at this stage.

Relationship between gut microbiota and host-metabolism: Emphasis on hormones related to reproductive function

Tarique Hussain et al.

Summary: The interactions between gut microbiota and host metabolism have a significant impact on health, including metabolic regulation and reproductive hormonal function. Gut bacteria participate in steroid hormone metabolism through enzymes and play a crucial role in reproductive events. Environmental bacteria can degrade steroid hormones and their compounds to eliminate pollution.
