A suite of agronomic factors can offset the effects of climate variability on rainfed maize production in Kenya

Kevin Ong'are Oluoch et al.

Summary: The study suggests that improving agronomic factors is crucial for increasing rainfed maize productivity in Kenya and can offset the effects of climate change. These findings may also offer insights into similar challenges for other crops.

Evolution of Fertiliser Use and its Impact on Maize Productivity in Kenya: Evidence from Multiple Surveys

Pradyot Ranjan Jena et al.

Summary: The liberalization of the fertiliser markets in Kenya did not have the desired effect of increasing fertiliser use and consequently maize yields, except in the high potential maize-growing areas. Factors such as education level, area under maize cultivation, agroecological zone, access to extension services, and food insecurity all play a role in fertiliser use and maize yields. Despite slight increases in fertiliser adoption and quantity applied per hectare, maize yields have remained stagnant, or even decreased slightly over the years.

Culturally appropriate shifts in staple grain consumption can improve multiple sustainability outcomes

Dongyang Wei et al.

Summary: Diets have a significant impact on both human and environmental health, and it is important to find sustainable dietary solutions that are in line with cultural preferences. Increasing the share of whole grains can improve nutrient supply and reduce environmental burden, while maximizing the share of C4 cereals can substantially decrease greenhouse gas emissions and water demand, especially in Africa and the Middle East.

The Long-Run Impacts of Temperature and Rainfall on Agricultural Growth in Sub-Saharan Africa

Mirza Nouman Ali Talib et al.

Summary: Rising temperatures have a significantly negative long-term impact on agricultural growth in Sub-Saharan Africa, while precipitation has a less important and statistically insignificant long-term effect. Every 1 degree Celsius rise in temperature could lead to a decrease of 4.2 to 4.7 percentage points in the agricultural growth rate.

Higher yields and more biodiversity on smaller farms

Vincent Ricciardi et al.

Summary: This study reveals that smaller farms have higher yields and biodiversity compared to larger farms, with little difference in greenhouse gas emissions and profits. The findings emphasize the importance of farm size in mediating environmental and social outcomes relevant to sustainable development.

Towards food supply chain resilience to environmental shocks

Kyle Frankel Davis et al.

Summary: The study emphasizes the importance of understanding the propagation or attenuation of environmental variability and shocks along food supply chains to enhance food security. It also highlights research gaps and the need to expand studies to cover a wider range of food items and types of shock. Insights from this research can inform key responses to cope with disruptions at individual, company, and governmental levels.

Beyond ownership: women's and men's land rights in Sub-Saharan Africa

Vanya Slavchevska et al.

Summary: Advancing women's land rights is a key goal in the international development agenda, but consensus is lacking on which rights should be monitored and reported in Sub-Saharan Africa. The concepts of land ownership, management, and economic rights should not be used interchangeably, as they do not always overlap.

Projected climate change impacts on mean and year-to-year variability of yield of key smallholder crops in Sub-Saharan Africa

Benjamin Stuch et al.

Summary: The study reveals significant impacts of climate change on maize and cereal yields in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Central Africa and West Africa. It suggests that tropical cereals are more resilient to climate change compared to maize, and proposes measures such as regional markets and new cultivars to help farmers adapt.
