Congo red dye removal from aqueous environment by cationic surfactant modified-biomass derived carbon: Equilibrium, kinetic, and thermodynamic modeling, and forecasting via artificial neural network approach

Ceren Karaman et al.

Summary: This study aimed to optimize, model, and forecast the biosorption of Congo Red onto biomass-derived bio-sorbent. The waste-orange-peels were processed to fabricate biomass-derived carbon, which was activated and modified. The physicochemical properties of the biosorbents were explored, and the effects of various factors on biosorption capacity were investigated. The findings revealed that the optimized ANN model can predict the behavior of the biosorption process accurately.

Functionalized carbon-based nanomaterials and quantum dots with antibacterial activity: a review

Mehran Alavi et al.

Summary: The emergence of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, especially in treating infectious immunodeficiency related diseases, is a complex issue. Nanomaterials (NMs) have played a novel role in treating bacterial infections compared to bulk materials. Carbon-containing quantum dots (QDs) like graphene oxide QD (GOQD), graphene QD (GQD), and carbon QD (CQD) have shown bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The stability and biocompatibility of QDs at higher doses in physiological conditions are major concerns, which can be addressed through functionalization. Additionally, the aspect ratio (AR) of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) like single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is a determining factor for antibacterial value, with SWCNTs showing higher antibacterial ability than MWCNTs.

Acid Brown-14 preconcentration onto an adsorbent consisting of Fe3O4, carbon nanotube and CeO: optimized by a multi-variable method

Mina Dana et al.

Summary: An efficient method for preconcentrating AB-14 before quantification by UV-Vis spectroscopy was presented in this study. A nanocomposite mCC, consisting of Fe3O4, carbon nanotube, and CeO, was synthesized at room temperature with environmentally-friendly materials, showing strong magnetic properties and high adsorption affinity for AB-14. Experimental design methods were used to optimize the adsorption conditions, reducing usage and time required for finding optimum parameters. Real samples of wool and silk were successfully applied for preconcentrating AB-14, demonstrating the applicability of the adsorbent.
