Small Effects: The Indispensable Foundation for a Cumulative Psychological Science

Friedrich M. Goetz et al.

Summary: Research indicates that complex psychological phenomena are influenced by multiple causes, each having a small effect. However, the current publication culture values large effects while overlooking small yet real effects. These small effects can have significant consequences when considered at scale and over time. Utilizing big data, machine learning, and changing cultural norms can help advance psychology research and practices.

Interoception is associated with anxiety and depression in pregnant women: A pilot study

Minami Noda et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between interoception, anxiety, and depression in Japanese pregnant women. The results suggest that interoceptive sensibility and the differences between sensibility and accuracy of interoception are associated with anxiety. Therefore, interoception might be an effective predictor tool for early detection of anxiety in pregnant women.

Body image dissatisfaction and interoceptive sensibility significantly predict postpartum depressive symptoms

Claudio Singh Solorzano et al.

Summary: A study on pregnant and postpartum women found that body image dissatisfaction and interoceptive sensibility play important roles in the development of postpartum depressive symptoms. Future research should investigate whether interventions aimed at increasing interoceptive sensibility can be useful in preventing depressive symptoms and identify the mechanisms underlying these changes.

Losing trust in body sensations: Interoceptive awareness and depression symptom severity among primary care patients

Julie Dunne et al.

Summary: The study found a negative correlation between the severity of depression and interoceptive abilities, with body trusting showing the most significant impact on depression. Lack of body trust appears to be a crucial factor in how individuals with depression interpret and respond to interoceptive stimuli, indicating a potential mechanism underlying hypoactivation in depression.

Interoception and obesity: a systematic review and meta-analysis of the relationship between interoception and BMI

Eric Robinson et al.

Summary: Research has shown that deficits in interoception are associated with higher BMI, with some variability in different facets of interoception. The accuracy and sensibility of interoception may play a role in BMI, but further studies are needed to clarify the specific relationship.
