Physical training considerations for optimizing performance in essential military tasks

Summary: This review article examines the physical attributes related to performance of essential military tasks like load carriage, manual material handling and casualty evacuation. It also discusses physical training intervention studies in military settings to enhance performance in these tasks. The results highlight the importance of muscular fitness in successfully completing these military tasks and suggest that combining strength, aerobic, and specific load carriage training may be an effective way to improve performance.

Energy cost and knee extensor strength changes following multiple day military load carriage

Summary: The study showed that two consecutive days of military load carriage significantly increased oxygen uptake and reduced knee extensor and flexor torque compared to a single day of load carriage. Therefore, physical training programs aimed at increasing knee extensor strength may help protect against increases in oxygen uptake.

Military load carriage effects on the gait of military personnel: A systematic review

Summary: The study found that carrying heavy loads had limited effects on spatio-temporal variables but resulted in increased trunk, hip, and knee flexion, as well as increased hip and knee extension moments in soldiers. Muscle activation of lower limb and trunk muscles also increased with loads. Despite some conflicting findings for most parameters, the overall results of this review were consistent with previous studies on combined military and civilian populations.
