Ultra-processed food consumption in adults across Europe

Elly Mertens et al.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the consumption of ultra-processed food and drinks (UPFDs) in adults across Europe and investigate their associations with total sugar intake, dietary fiber intake, and high BMI. Results showed significant variation in UPFDs consumption across European countries, with no observed association between UPFDs consumption and country-level burden of high BMI, despite a correlation with higher total sugar intake.

Chronic diseases are first associated with the degradation and artificialization of food matrices rather than with food composition: calorie quality matters more than calorie quantity

A. Fardet et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the importance of food matrices on health. The study found that the increased risk of chronic diseases worldwide is primarily associated with the degradation and artificialization of food matrices, rather than only their nutrient contents. The nutrient balance of a food is only a small part of its overall health potential.

Ultra-processed food consumption and adult obesity risk: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis

Sajjad Moradi et al.

Summary: This study indicates that consumption of ultra-processed food (UPF) is associated with an increased risk of overweight, obesity, and abdominal obesity, with every 10% increase in UPF consumption leading to a 7%, 6%, and 5% higher risk of overweight, obesity, and abdominal obesity, respectively. The findings suggest a positive linear association between UPF consumption and abdominal obesity, as well as a positive linear association with the risk of overweight/obesity in cross-sectional studies and a positive monotonic association in cohort studies.

Ultra-processed food consumption, socio-demographics and diet quality in Australian adults

Laura Marchese et al.

Summary: This study found that younger adults, Australian-born adults, those experiencing the greatest area-level disadvantage, individuals with lower levels of education, and those in the second lowest household income quintile were more likely to consume ultra-processed foods. Consumption of ultra-processed foods was inversely associated with diet quality, as indicated by lower scores on the Dietary Guideline Index related to various food groups.

Consumption of Ultra-Processed Foods Is Inversely Associated with Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet: A Cross-Sectional Study

Monica Dinu et al.

Summary: This study found that 16.4% of the ultra-processed foods consumed by Italian adults come from a daily intake of 299 grams of UPF. The research also indicates that participants with lower adherence to the Mediterranean diet had a higher proportion of UPF consumption, emphasizing the importance of promoting healthy eating habits.

Consumption of ultra-processed foods and health status: a systematic review and meta-analysis

G. Pagliai et al.

Summary: Increasing evidence suggests that high consumption of ultra-processed foods is associated with an increase in non-communicable diseases, overweight, and obesity. Both cross-sectional and prospective cohort studies have found that high UPF consumption is linked to a poorer cardiometabolic risk profile and a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, depression, and all-cause mortality.

Ultraprocessed Food Consumption is Strongly and Dose-Dependently Associated with Excess Body Weight in Swiss Women

Giulia Pestoni et al.

Summary: This study found that the proportion of ultraprocessed food consumption was strongly and dose-dependently associated with excess body weight in women but not in men. Further studies are needed to understand the potential mechanisms behind this gender difference. Increasing evidence of the negative impact of ultraprocessed foods on health highlights the importance of considering these products in future public health strategies.

Consumption of Ultra-Processed Food and Its Association with Sociodemographic Characteristics and Diet Quality in a Representative Sample of French Adults

Giovanna Calixto Andrade et al.

Summary: The study described the consumption of ultra-processed food (UPF) in French adults and found that consumption was higher among younger individuals and urban residents, but lower among those with incomplete high school education and retirees. Consumption of UPF was positively associated with dietary energy density, total carbohydrates, free sugar, total and saturated fat content, and inadequate intake of saturated fat, free sugar, and fiber.

Towards unified and impactful policies to reduce ultra-processed food consumption and promote healthier eating

Barry M. Popkin et al.

Summary: The global rise in obesity and nutrition-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) necessitates decisive new food policy initiatives. Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and drinks have negative impacts on weight gain and NCD risk. Some countries are taking action, such as implementing taxes on ultra-processed drinks and developing effective package labelling.

A Systematic Review of Worldwide Consumption of Ultra-Processed Foods: Findings and Criticisms

Mirko Marino et al.

Summary: The debate surrounding the NOVA classification as a tool for categorizing foods based on processing degree remains ongoing. Research reveals large variations in ultra-processed food consumption levels across different countries and demographics, with the United States and United Kingdom showing higher levels compared to Italy. Men, young people, and overweight individuals tend to have higher consumption levels of ultra-processed foods.
