Gut microbiota associations with diet in irritable bowel syndrome and the effect of low FODMAP diet and probiotics

Heidi M. Staudacher et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between diet and microbiota in IBS patients, as well as the impact of two nutritional interventions on the microbiota. The results showed that the low FODMAP diet and probiotic supplementation can alter the microbiota in IBS patients, but baseline microbiota cannot predict clinical response to interventions.

Gut Microbial Dysbiosis in the Pathogenesis of Gastrointestinal Dysmotility and Metabolic Disorders

Rajan Singh et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota, the largest and most complex population of microorganisms in the human body, plays vital roles in regulating host immunity, procuring energy from food, and preventing the colonization of pathogens. Dysbiosis in the gut microbiota is increasingly recognized as a core pathophysiology in gastrointestinal motility and metabolic disorders, although the causal relationship is still largely unexplored. Research is ongoing to understand the communication between gut microbes and host physiology, with potential therapeutic avenues currently limited to antibiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation, probiotics, and dietary interventions.

Summary: Both LFD and TDA were effective in reducing symptoms in Chinese IBS-D patients, but LFD led to earlier improvements in stool frequency and excessive wind. The therapeutic effect of LFD was associated with changes in fecal microbiota and fermentation index.

Influence of low FODMAP-gluten free diet on gut microbiota alterations and symptom severity in Iranian patients with irritable bowel syndrome

Kaveh Naseri et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of a low FODMAP-gluten free diet (LF-GFD) on Iranian patients with IBS and found that patients experienced significant improvement in IBS symptoms severity, reduction in fecal calprotectin level, and changes in gut microbiota composition after the intervention. Further trials are needed to establish the long-term efficacy and safety of this dietary intervention in IBS patients.

Recent advances in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome

Silvia Bonetto et al.

Summary: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder with significant impact on quality of life and healthcare costs. Personalized management is required, including physician-patient relationship, patient education, dietary advice, stress reduction, nonpharmacological and pharmacotherapy. The involvement of gastrointestinal microbiota in IBS treatment presents opportunities for modulation through probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation.
