Effects of whey protein and dietary fiber intake on insulin sensitivity, body composition, energy expenditure, blood pressure, and appetite in subjects with abdominal obesity

Rasmus Fuglsang-Nielsen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that intake of whey protein reduced subjective hunger in subjects with abdominal obesity. However, neither whey protein nor dietary fiber from wheat bran had significant effects on insulin sensitivity, gut hormone responses, body composition, or other metabolic parameters compared to maltodextrin and low dietary fiber.

Depletion of the gut microbiota differentially affects the impact of whey protein on high-fat diet-induced obesity and intestinal permeability

Serena Boscaini et al.

Summary: Whey protein isolate (WPI) has been found to reverse the effects of a high-fat diet on metabolic and physiological functions through mainly microbiota-independent mechanisms, demonstrating a protective effect on inflammation and intestinal permeability disrupted by high-fat diet, which can be reversed by gut microbiota depletion.

Impaired tricarboxylic acid cycle flux and mitochondrial aerobic respiration during isoproterenol induced myocardial ischemia is rescued by bilobalide

Zhe Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the anti-MI mechanism of Ginkgo biloba L. extract (GBE) from the perspective of energy metabolism flux regulation. It found that bilobalide in GBE protected mitochondrial aerobic respiration, modulated the TCA cycle flux, and reduced abnormal metabolite accumulation in ischemia-like cardiomyocytes. The findings suggest a new potential drug treatment for MI and demonstrate the power of MFA/Seahorse combination in herbal medicine research.

Analysis of Gut Microbiota in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease and Hypertension

Chuanqi Wan et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases have high morbidity and mortality rates. A study analyzing the microbiota of 300 healthy controls, 300 patients with high blood pressure, and 300 patients with coronary heart disease found significant differences in microbiota richness among the groups. Each disease group had its dominant bacteria in terms of richness.

Protein Source and Muscle Health in Older Adults: A Literature Review

Christianto Putra et al.

Summary: Higher dietary protein intake can help prevent sarcopenia and maintain musculoskeletal health in older individuals, but achieving these levels can be challenging for those with declining appetites and underlying health conditions. The debate over whether different protein sources affect musculoskeletal health differently in older adults continues, with a growing interest in plant-based protein options like pea protein. More research is needed to provide clearer information on the effects of plant-sourced versus animal-sourced protein on the aging musculoskeletal system.

Molecular pathways behind acquired obesity: Adipose tissue and skeletal muscle multiomics in monozygotic twin pairs discordant for BMI

Birgitta W. van der Kolk et al.

Summary: Tissue-specific mechanisms related to obesity-induced complications are not fully understood, but study findings suggest that adipose tissue is more affected by acquired obesity than skeletal muscle. This can lead to downregulated mitochondrial pathways, upregulated inflammatory pathways, and lower creatine levels in heavier individuals. Additionally, metabolomics analyses indicate elevated levels of proinflammatory lipids in acquired obesity.
