Human milk fatty acid composition and its association with maternal blood and adipose tissue fatty acid content in a cohort of women from Europe

Francesca Giuffrida et al.

Summary: The study found that maternal adipose tissue serves as a reservoir of PUFAs and LCPUFAs for human milk, while erythrocytes are not correlated with Milk FA content. Plasma also supplies PUFAs and LCPUFAs to maternal milk. Therefore, it is necessary to provide an adequate intake of PUFAs and LCPUFAs during pregnancy or even before conception and lactation to ensure sufficient supply for both mothers and infants via breast milk.

Total Fatty Acid and Polar Lipid Species Composition of Human Milk

Talat Bashir Ahmed et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between fatty acid (FA) and polar lipid species composition in human milk. The results showed that there were no differences in major FA, phosphatidylcholine, or sphingomyelin species percentages between milk with high or low fat content. However, milk with high fat content had lower ratios of phospholipid-to-total-FA and sphingomyelin-to-phosphatidylcholine compared to milk with low fat content.

Changes in human milk fatty acid composition and maternal lifestyle-related factors over a decade: a comparison between the two Ulm Birth Cohort Studies

Linda P. Siziba et al.

Summary: This study investigated the variation in human milk fatty acid composition during lactation and found differences in fatty acid profiles between two different cohorts, reflecting changes in maternal dietary habits. The results suggest that infants may be at risk of inadequate intake of long-chain fatty acids through human milk.

The Fatty Acid Species and Quantity Consumed by the Breastfed Infant Are Important for Growth and Development

Alexandra D. George et al.

Summary: The study found that infant intake of various fatty acids is positively correlated with infant growth and development, including C15:0, C18:1, C18:2, and C20:3. However, no relationship was found between C22:5 and C20:5 and infant head circumference. Infant total lipid intake and the intake of many fatty acids play essential roles in infant growth and development.
