Seismic Damage Identification Method for Curved Beam Bridges Based on Wavelet Packet Norm Entropy

Tongfa Deng et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method for seismic damage identification in curved beam bridges based on wavelet packet norm entropy (WPNE). Numerical simulations are conducted to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of this method. The results show that WPNE can accurately identify the damage location and characterize the severity of damage, and it also has a certain resistance to noise interference.

Vibration response and failure modes analysis of the temporary support structure under blasting excavation of tunnels

Xiaoming Guan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the safety issues of temporary support structures in tunnel blasting construction and explores the dynamic response and damage characteristics of a temporary middle wall. Simulation results show that the closest blasting holes have the most significant impact on the wall's damage.

Phase field model for fracture based on modified couple stress

Pham Hong Cong et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the crack propagation behavior of plane strain micro-plates using the modified couple stress theory and the phase-field theory. A phase-field formulation for fracture mechanics based on the framework of the modified couple stress is established for the first time. The results highlight the difference in mechanical properties during crack propagation when considering size-effect based on modified couple stress. This work is important for scientists studying the fracture development process in microstructures.

Reordering of vertical vibration modes in an axially compressed beam on a Winkler foundation

Pengyu Cao et al.

Summary: This study reveals a special vibration characteristic of an axially compressed Timoshenko beam on a Winkler foundation, where the vibration configuration in the sequence of the natural frequencies may undergo a reordering in response to changes in certain parameters. New explicit analytical expressions of the natural frequencies are derived, considering both the shear and rotatory inertia effects in the beam. The key independent dimensionless parameters that control the modal reordering phenomenon are identified from the resulting frequency. By examining the vibration response of structures with various parameters over the full range of axial loads, it is observed that the frequencies of some initial low- and high-order vibration modes approach each other and then veer away, causing a reordering in the vibration modes. The influence of key structural parameters is investigated, showing that structures with a greater slenderness ratio or a greater relative stiffness between the foundation and beam are more prone to a vibration modal reordering under axial pressure.

Shaking table test of a prefabricated steel frame structure with all-bolted connections

Ailin Zhang et al.

Summary: The seismic performance of an all bolt-connected prefabricated steel frame structure (ABPSFS) was studied through a shaking table test on a scaled model. The research analyzed the dynamic properties, seismic responses, and failure mechanisms of the ABPSFS under different peak ground accelerations (PGAs), and proposed corresponding performance objectives in the seismic design. The results showed failure modes such as warping of flange plates, slipping of washers in bolted joints, and cracking of concrete floors for ABPSFS.

Dynamic Behaviour of Bridge Girders with Trapezoidal Profiled Webs Subjected to Moving Loads

Zhiyu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the degradation of dynamic behavior of bridge girders with trapezoidal profiled webs under different vehicle moving loads. The finite element modeling based parametric analysis demonstrates that vibration characteristics are significantly affected by corrugation details, and the structural service life results are closely related to experimental data. The dynamic nodal velocity and deflection of girders are greatly affected by the magnitude of the load corresponding to the overload of the vehicle rather than the vehicle speed, which is also observed in fatigue life prediction analysis related to crack initiation.

Fragility functions for local failure mechanisms in unreinforced masonry buildings: a typological study in Ferrara, Italy

Marco Nale et al.

Summary: Unreinforced masonry buildings are vulnerable to local failure mechanisms during seismic actions, especially older buildings. The effectiveness of connections between walls and the slenderness of walls can both lead to Out-Of-Plane mechanisms.
