Revealing Microstructural, Textural, and Hardness Evolution of Ti-6Al-4V Sheet Cooled From Sub β-Transus Temperature at Different Rates

Linjiang Chai et al.

Summary: A hot-rolled Ti-6Al-4V sheet was subjected to different cooling methods. The microstructures of water-cooled and air-cooled specimens contained primary α grains and transformed secondary α plates, while the furnace-cooled specimen had coarse-equiaxed α grains and residual β phase. The major textural feature of the cooled specimens was similar to that of the as-received material, but lower cooling rates resulted in increased textural intensity. The hardness of the water-cooled specimen was higher than that of the as-received material, but decreased with decreasing cooling rates due to increased grain sizes.

In situ observation of competitive growth of α grains during β → α transformation in laser beam manufactured TiAl alloys

Jie Liu et al.

Summary: For the first time, this study conducted in situ observation of the grain refinement mechanism in TiAl alloys under high temperature conditions using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The results showed a significant reduction in volume fraction and size of borides in the welding zone, with non-Burgers alpha grains nucleating earlier and Burgers alpha grains growing faster during the beta -> alpha transformation process.

Texturing and Phase Evolution in Ti-6Al-4V: Effect of Electron Beam Melting Process, Powder Re-Using, and HIP Treatment

Vladimir V. Popov et al.

Summary: The study investigates microstructural changes and specific texture development in Ti-6Al-4V specimens produced by EBM under different conditions, and explores the effects of powder recycling and HIP on the structure and properties of the samples. EBSD analysis reveals microstructural phenomena and phase transformations in the as-printed and treated samples, explaining the modifications in mechanical properties after EBM and HIP. The research aims to assess the possibility of reusing residual titanium alloy powder for manufacturing titanium components using EBM and HIP methods.
