Effects of Nb and NbC additives on microstructure and properties of WC-Co-Ni cemented carbides

Tao Lin et al.

Summary: Cemented carbides (WC-Co-Ni) with the addition of Nb and NbC were prepared by powder metallurgy method. The microstructure and mechanical properties were analyzed. The results showed that the addition of Nb or NbC can reduce the grain size of WC. Nb has a stronger inhibitory effect on WC grain growth than NbC. The transverse fracture strength of the samples first increased and then decreased with the increase of Nb and NbC contents. The hardness of cemented carbides increased with the content of additives. The fracture toughness and impact toughness decreased with the increase of NbC and Nb contents.

Effect of the carbon content on the morphology evolution of the η phase in cemented carbides with the CoNiFeCr high entropy alloy binder

Cheng Qian et al.

Summary: The carbon content significantly affects the morphology of the eta phase, with an increase in carbon content leading to a decrease in the amount of eta phase and local aggregation, showing typical segregation. In addition, eta phase segregation results in an increase in hardness dispersion and a further decrease in toughness.

A Finite Element Analysis of the Effects of Graphene and Carbon Nanotubes on Thermal Conductivity of Co Phase in WC-Co Carbide

Zhengwu Li et al.

Summary: By adding CNTs and GNPs to WC-Co carbide, the thermal conductivity of the carbide is significantly improved in this study. Finite element simulations show that the interface thermal conductivity has a significant impact on the composite phase thermal conductivity, and the volume fractions of CNTs and GNPs also affect the thermal conductivity. Proper curvature and ratio of CNTs and GNPs are suggested for better thermal conductivity.

Failure Behavior of Cemented Tungsten Carbide Materials: A Case Study of Mining Drill Bits

Prvan Kumar Katiyar et al.

Summary: This study focused on examining failed tungsten carbide (WC-Co) drill bits to identify the causes of insert failure, which were primarily due to shear-off, cracking, and wear. Microscopic analysis using FE-SEM and AFM helped in understanding the degradation and tribocorrosion mechanisms of WC-Co inserts, along with the shape change mechanisms of individual WC grains influenced by tribocorrosion. The study discussed wear and corrosion mechanisms of WC-Co inserts, emphasizing the importance of understanding tribocorrosion mechanisms for the selection and development of suitable WC-Co tool materials.

Mechanism of adhesion failure during interrupted cutting with cemented carbide tools: Experimental and ab-initio perspective

Siyuan Gao et al.

Summary: The study revealed that adhesion failure of cemented carbide tools during interrupted cutting is mainly due to the reduced interfacial strength leading to fractures. Insufficient stability of the interface results in large-scale crack expansion in the material, causing it to detach from the workpiece surface.

Fracture behavior of cemented carbides with CoNiFe medium entropy alloy binder

Cheng Qian et al.

Summary: The study found that WC-CoNiFe has higher fracture toughness than WC-Co, and fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth are closely related to microstructural characteristics. The increase in fracture toughness is attributed to ductile ligament bridging and crack deflection as the mean free path of the binder phase increased or the contiguity of the carbide phase decreased. Furthermore, the dominant effect of maximum stress intensity factor on fatigue crack growth was observed, with a transition from brittle to ductile fracture modes as fracture toughness increased.
