Wire-arc additive manufacturing of a novel high-performance Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy: Processing, characterization and feasibility demonstration

Thomas Klein et al.

Summary: Wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is a viable technology for producing metallic components of medium complexity at a high deposition rate. A novel alloy system based on the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu system has been successfully developed for WAAM, exhibiting optimal mechanical properties and a pronounced age-hardening response. The alloy, with an isotropic proof stress of up to around 340 MPa and a fracture strain of up to around 11%, has been demonstrated to be suitable for advanced applications, as shown through the fabrication of a motorcycle piston.

Summary: WAAM technology is used to manufacture medium-to-large metallic parts using aluminum alloys, with aluminum alloy 5356 being analyzed in this study. Three working modes for aluminum alloys are compared, with pulsed-AC mode showing significantly reduced porosity levels and being a very attractive mode for this aluminum alloy.
