Two-Dimensional Supersolid Formation in Dipolar Condensates

T. Bland et al.

Summary: A robust supersolid state can be formed in a two-dimensional system by directly evaporative cooling into the supersolid phase. The research provides a theoretical basis for the formation process of two-dimensional supersolids and defines a practical path to the formation of large two-dimensional supersolid arrays.

Compressibility and the equation of state of an optical quantum gas in a box

Erik Busley et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a measurement of the compressibility of a two-dimensional quantum gas of light in a nanostructured dye-filled optical microcavity, obtaining the equation of state for the optical medium. Signatures of Bose-Einstein condensation in a finite-size system are observed upon entering the quantum degenerate regime.

Supersolid-like square- and honeycomb-lattice crystallization of droplets in a dipolar condensate

Luis E. Young-S et al.

Summary: We observe the crystallization of droplets in square and honeycomb lattice structures in a quasi-two-dimensional trapped dipolar condensate. These three types of crystallization can occur under the same atomic interaction and trap frequencies. The energy of all three crystallizations follows a scaling relation with the number of atoms, indicating their energetic plausibility. The square lattice crystallization with an occupied central site is a potential candidate for future experimental observation.

Supersolid edge and bulk phases of a dipolar quantum gas in a box

S. M. Roccuzzo et al.

Summary: We investigate the density distributions of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensed gas confined in a box potential, focusing on the effects of supersolidity. The ground-state density exhibits a depletion in the bulk region and an accumulation of atoms near the walls due to the competition between attractive and repulsive forces. In a quasi-two-dimensional geometry, we observe a ringlike configuration near the boundary of the box, indicating supersolid and crystal effects. In the case of square box trapping, density oscillations along the edges resemble quasi-one-dimensional configurations. Supersolidity can also be observed in the bulk region for large atom numbers, reflecting the symmetry of the confining potential.

Summary: We studied the emergence of supersolid-like crystalline structures in a quasi-two-dimensional spin-orbit coupled spin-2 condensate. Different strengths of spin-orbit coupling and interatomic interactions led to a variety of nontrivial density patterns in the solutions.

Supersolid-like states in a two-dimensional trapped spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 condensate

S. K. Adhikari

Summary: This study investigates supersolid-like states in a quasi-two-dimensional trapped Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupled spin-1 condensate. Different types of states are formed depending on the strength of spin-orbit coupling, including superlattice/superstripe states and multi-ring states. These states are found to be dynamically stable and will contribute to a better understanding of crystallization in solids.

Oscillations of a quasi-one-dimensional dipolar supersolid

B. Kh Turmanov et al.

Summary: This study investigates the properties of a supersolid state in quasi-one-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate, considering two possible mechanisms of realization within the framework of the Lee-Huang-Yang theory. Both mechanisms are emphasized in the formation of supersolid properties. Numerical simulations of the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation are used to identify distinct oscillation frequencies associated with the superfluid fraction and crystalline components of the supersolid.

Maintaining supersolidity in one and two dimensions

E. Poli et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate theoretically the supersolidity in three-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates, focusing on the impact of trap geometry on the dimensionality of resulting droplet arrays. We found that supersolidity is well established in one-dimensional arrays and may also be favorable in two-dimensional arrays with proper scaling of atom number to trap volume. By developing a tractable variational model, we were able to study droplet crystals and their excitations, and suggest potential creation of exotic ring and stripe states with experimentally feasible parameters. This work sets the stage for future research on two-dimensional dipolar supersolids in realistic settings.

Pattern formation in quantum ferrofluids: From supersolids to superglasses

J. Hertkorn et al.

Summary: The study investigates the phase diagram of two-dimensional quantum ferrofluids formed from ultracold atoms in different trap geometries, revealing the dominance of two-dimensional supersolid crystals at low densities and the presence of honeycomb, labyrinthine states, and a pumpkin phase at higher densities. The research sheds light on the various patterns of quantum ferrofluids and demonstrates that their occurrence is common in strongly dipolar interacting systems stabilized by effects beyond mean-field.

Summary: This work explores the signatures of different geometries in confined finite condensates of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates, revealing a rich spectrum of states from honeycomb patterns to striped supersolids. By optimizing relevant parameters, transitions between distinct supersolids should be observable in current experiments.

On-demand generation of dark soliton trains in Bose-Einstein condensates

A. Romero-Ros et al.

Summary: This study describes matter-wave interference mechanisms in one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates that allow for the controlled generation of dark soliton trains by choosing suitable box-type initial configurations. It is found that the initial box size directly affects the solitons' properties, while the initial phase determines the parity of the solutions. Numerical simulations confirm the analytical results with high agreement.
