Multi-task network for automated analysis of high-resolution endomicroscopy images to detect cervical precancer and cancer

David Brenes et al.

Summary: Cervical cancer is a public health emergency in low- and middle-income countries, where resource limitations hinder effective prevention. This study proposes a deep learning framework that uses a low-cost device called high-resolution endomicroscope (HRME) to diagnose cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or more severe. The study shows that the proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art architectures and achieves comparable performance to expert colposcopy. Incorporating HPV DNA test results as a feature improves the specificity of the diagnosis.

Cervical lesion assessment using real-time microendoscopy image analysis in Brazil: The CLARA study

Brady Hunt et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the diagnostic performance of HRME with morphologic image analysis for detecting CIN3+ was similar to colposcopy, but slightly lower for detecting CIN2+. However, using a neural network-based algorithm, HRME had comparable sensitivity and specificity to colposcopy for detecting CIN2+. This suggests that HRME could serve as a low-cost alternative to colposcopy in the prevention of cervical cancer.

High frame rate video mosaicking microendoscope to image large regions of intact tissue with subcellular resolution

Brady Hunt et al.

Summary: High-resolution microendoscopy (HRME) utilizes a high frame rate CMOS sensor and optical probe holder to enable rapid, high-quality investigation of large tissue regions, increasing the size of the region of interest from 0.5 mm^2 to >30 mm^2. The system's real-time deployment in vivo has been demonstrated, with the source code made publicly available.
