Challenges of today for Na-based batteries of the future: From materials to cell metrics

Ivana Hasa et al.

Summary: Emerging sodium-based battery technologies are challenging the dominance of lithium-ion batteries, each with their own challenges and metrics due to different concepts and chemical structures. While sodium-ion batteries are nearly ready to challenge lithium-ion technology in some applications, other battery concepts offer higher performance gains, contingent upon overcoming major hurdles.

Strategies for Alleviating Electrode Expansion of Graphite Electrodes in Sodium-Ion Batteries Followed by In Situ Electrochemical Dilatometry

Ines Escher et al.

Summary: The study investigates two strategies to mitigate electrode expansion during the electrochemical intercalation/deintercalation of solvated sodium ions into graphite. Replacing PVDF binder with CMC binder reduces initial sodiation expansion, while adding ethylenediamine (EN) as a co-solvent significantly decreases both initial sodiation expansion and cycling breathing of the electrode.

Operando Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction Studies on TiS2: The Effect of Propylene Carbonate on Reduction Mechanism

Raphaelle G. Houdeville et al.

Summary: In this study, a systematic investigation was conducted on solvent co-intercalation during the electrochemical reduction of titanium disulfide in lithium cells. It was found that the formation of co-intercalated phase is mainly triggered by the presence of propylene carbonate, and the extent of capacity loss is correlated to the content of propylene carbonate in the electrolyte.
