Recent developments in Pd-CeO2 nano-composite electrocatalysts for anodic reactions in anion exchange membrane fuel cells

Hamish A. Miller et al.

Summary: It was shown in 2016 that a polymer electrolyte fuel cell without Pt electrocatalysts can achieve high peak power density using a silver-based oxygen reduction cathode and a Pd-CeO2 hydrogen oxidation reaction anodic electrocatalyst. However, the poor kinetics of the hydrogen oxidation reaction under alkaline conditions still pose a challenge to the development of Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (AEMFCs). Recent studies have focused on the enhancement of the hydrogen oxidation reaction on Pd-CeO2, highlighting the importance of the bifunctional mechanism and the optimal binding of Had and OHad species.

Enhanced Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Formate via Introducing Surface Reactive Oxygen Species to a CeO2 Substrate

Yufei Zhao et al.

Summary: A Pd-loaded CeO2 catalyst prepared through steam treatment at 400 degrees C showed enhanced performance in formate oxidation reaction (FOR) compared to the counterpart without treatment, attributed to the introduction of surface reactive oxygen species promoting the desorption of adsorbed hydrogen intermediates. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that oxygen vacancies on the CeO2 surface boosted OH* adsorption ability and accelerated kinetics of the potential-limiting step. This work proposes a new strategy for enhancing FOR catalyst activity and advances understanding of FOR mechanism in alkaline media for DFFC applications.
