In Situ Studies of Methanol Decomposition Over Cu(111) and Cu2O/Cu(111): Effects of Reactant Pressure, Surface Morphology, and Hot Spots of Active Sites

Ivan Orozco et al.

Summary: The dissociative adsorption of methanol on Cu(111) and ultrathin Cu2O films was investigated using a combination of AP-XPS, STM, and DFT calculations. It was found that methanol adsorbed dissociatively on Cu(111) forming methoxy, formaldehyde, and formate, while on Cu2O/Cu(111) it decomposed into a wider variety of species due to interactions with lattice oxygen. The difference in reactivity was attributed to the presence of oxygen on the oxide surface.

Selective Methane Oxidation to Methanol on ZnO/Cu2O/Cu(111) Catalysts: Multiple Site-Dependent Behaviors

Erwei Huang et al.

Summary: This study presents an efficient catalyst, ZnO/Cu2O/Cu(111), capable of converting methane and oxygen to methanol at lower temperatures without the need for water, displaying high methanol selectivity. The unique structure of the catalyst provides multiple centers with different catalytic activities, leading to a methane-to-methanol conversion at room temperature. The identification of site-dependent behavior of the catalyst opens up a design strategy for guiding efficient methane reformation with high methanol selectivity.

Surface characterization and methane activation on SnOx/Cu2O/Cu(111) inverse oxide/metal catalysts

Jindong Kang et al.

Summary: A novel SnOx/Cu2O/Cu(111) interface was reported for low-temperature methane activation, enabling the conversion of methane into high value chemicals. Small, well-dispersed SnOx nanoclusters were identified on the Cu2O/Cu(111) substrate, with a small amount of tin oxide coverage producing the highest concentration of CHx groups. The activation barrier for C-H bond cleavage was drastically reduced on SnOx/Cu2O/Cu(111), allowing methane dissociation to occur at temperatures between 300-500 K.
