Recent progress on MTO reaction mechanisms and regulation of acid site distribution in the zeolite framework

Sen Wang et al.

Summary: Methanol to olefins (MTO) is an important process for producing valuable chemicals from carbon resources. In this review, recent progress on the reaction mechanism and the influence of acid site distribution in zeolites on MTO and other related reactions involving methanol are summarized. The review also discusses methods for regulating the acid site distribution in zeolite frameworks and its potential for designing highly efficient MTO catalysts.

Progressive steps and catalytic cycles in methanol-to-hydrocarbons reaction over acidic zeolites

Liu Yang et al.

Summary: Understanding the reaction network and mechanism of methanol-to-hydrocarbons conversion is an important challenge in the field of zeolite catalysis. Recent studies have identified several initial unsaturated aldehydes/ketones containing the C-C bond and provided a complete roadmap of the reaction process using spectroscopic and kinetic analyses.

Insight into Carbocation-Induced Noncovalent Interactions in the Methanol-to-Olefins Reaction over ZSM-5 Zeolite by Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy

Chao Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that electron-deficient cyclopentenyl cations in ZSM-5 zeolite can capture compounds produced in the MTO reaction through noncovalent interactions, including alkanes, methanol, and olefins. These carbocation-induced noncovalent interactions modulate the product selectivity of the hydrocarbon pool reaction. The research identified intermolecular spatial proximities/interactions through two-dimensional C-13-C-13 correlation solid-state NMR spectroscopy.

Comparing alkene-mediated and formaldehyde-mediated diene formation routes in methanol-to-olefins catalysis in MFI and CHA

Lauren Kilburn et al.

Summary: This study investigates the formation of dienes during methanol-to-olefins (MTO) process in MFI and CHA zeolites using density functional theory. It was found that tert-butyl exhibits the most favorable rate in the CH2O-mediated pathway, while hydride transfers between secondary alkyls and alkenes are preferred in the alkene-mediated route.

Probing into the building and evolution of primary hydrocarbon pool species in the process of methanol to olefins over H-ZSM-5 zeolite

Li Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the formation and evolution of primary hydrocarbon pool (HCP) species in the methanol to olefins (MTO) process over H-ZSM-5 zeolite. It was found that MCPdienes are identified as the primary HCP intermediates in the early transition period of MTO, promoting the production of olefins.
