A Change from Kinetic to Thermodynamic Control Enables trans-Selective Stereochemical Editing of Vicinal Diols

Yu-An Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reports a new method for selectively catalytic isomerization of cis-1,2-diols to trans-diequatorial-1,2-diols, which proceeds under mild conditions, is highly chemoselective, and broadly functional group tolerant. The method provides a concise access to trans-diol products that are not readily obtained using other methods, and operates through a reversible hydrogen atom transfer pathway mediated by the silanethiol catalyst.

Selective Isomerization via Transient Thermodynamic Control: Dynamic Epimerization of trans to cis Diols

Christian J. Oswood et al.

Summary: Traditional approaches to stereoselective synthesis usually require high levels of control in forming new stereocenters. This study presents an alternative method where the stereochemistry of organic substrates is selectively edited without further structural modification, allowing access to rare or valuable stereochemical configurations.

A Germanium Catalyst Accelerates the Photoredox α-C(sp3)-H Alkylation of Primary Amines

Kentaro Sakai et al.

Summary: Selective C(sp(3))-H functionalization using photoredox catalysis and hydrogen atom transfer catalysis has attracted increasing attention. We report the use of a Ph2GeCl2 cocatalyst that greatly improves the yield of alpha-C(sp(3))-H alkylation of primary amines catalyzed by a PC-HAT hybrid system. The alpha-position of the amino group selectively reacts, even when weaker C-H bonds exist in the substrates. This finding may aid in the design of novel site-selective hybrid catalysis.

Electronic control over site-selectivity in hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) based C(sp3)-H functionalization promoted by electrophilic reagents

Marco Galeotti et al.

Summary: Direct functionalization of C(sp(3))-H bonds is a key focus in developing new synthetic methods. Among intermolecular C-H bond functionalization strategies, hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) methods using radical or radical-like reagents have gained increasing attention due to their ability to introduce a variety of atoms and groups in mild conditions. Selectivity control over aliphatic C-H bonds is crucial and factors influencing it have been discussed. This review article provides a detailed description of HAT reagents, associated mechanistic features, and selectivity patterns observed in the functionalization of increasingly complex substrates, based on an analysis of recent literature.

A Change from Kinetic to Thermodynamic Control Enables trans-Selective Stereochemical Editing of Vicinal Diols

Yu-An Zhang et al.

Summary: This report describes a new method for the selective catalytic isomerization of cis-1,2-diols using a silanethiol catalyst. The method is highly chemoselective and tolerant to a wide range of functional groups, providing a concise route to trans-diol products. Mechanistic studies suggest that the isomerization proceeds through a reversible hydrogen atom transfer pathway mediated by the silanethiol catalyst.

Site- and Stereoselective C-H Alkylations of Carbohydrates Enabled by Cooperative Photoredox, Hydrogen Atom Transfer, and Organotin Catalysis

Daniel J. Gorelik et al.

Summary: The research found that diorganotin dihalides can act as cocatalysts in the site-selective and stereoselective couplings of diol-containing carbohydrates with electron-deficient alkenes when combined with an Ir(III) photoredox catalyst and quinuclidine. This process involves the formation of a cyclic stannylene acetal intermediate, which enhances reactivity towards hydrogen atom abstraction by the quinuclidinium radical cation and leads to C-alkylation of the carbohydrate substrate.

Photocatalytic, site-selective oxidations of carbohydrates

Daniel J. Gorelik et al.

Summary: Site-selective oxidations of carbohydrates have been achieved using acridinium photocatalysis and quinuclidine hydrogen atom transfer catalysis. Protocols have been developed for oxidations of all-equatorial carbohydrates and those containing cis-1,2-diols. The site-selectivity is determined by the relative rates of hydrogen atom transfer from the carbohydrate C-H bonds and can be enhanced using a phosphate hydrogen-bonding or boronic acid catalyst.
