Power-efficient silicon nitride thermo-optic phase shifters for visible light

Zheng Yong et al.

Summary: We present power-efficient silicon nitride waveguide phase shifters for blue, green, and yellow wavelengths. These phase shifters have low power consumption due to a suspended structure and multi-pass waveguide design. Fabricated on 200-mm silicon wafers using deep ultraviolet lithography, these devices are part of an active visible-light integrated photonics platform. The average power consumption to achieve a n phase shift is measured to be 0.78, 0.93, 1.09, and 1.20 mW at wavelengths of 445, 488, 532, and 561 nm, respectively. These phase shifters are integrated into Mach-Zehnder interferometer switches with rise (fall) times of approximately 570 (590) μs.

Integrated visible-light liquid-crystal-based phase modulators

Milica Notaros et al.

Summary: An integrated liquid-crystal-based phase modulator operating at visible wavelengths was developed and demonstrated. The device utilizes a silicon-nitride-based 300-mm-wafer foundry platform and a liquid-crystal integration process to actively tune the effective index of a section of silicon-nitride waveguide and induce a phase shift. The experimental results show that the device can achieve a significant phase shift within a compact size, providing a low-power solution for integrated systems at visible wavelengths.

Near ultraviolet photonic integrated lasers based on silicon nitride

Anat Siddharth et al.

Summary: Low phase noise lasers based on III-V semiconductors and silicon photonics have been widely used in the near-infrared spectral regime. Recent advancements in low-loss silicon nitride-based photonic integrated resonators have surpassed external diode and fiber lasers in terms of phase noise and frequency agility in the 1550 nm-telecommunication window. In this study, we demonstrate a hybrid integrated laser composed of a gallium nitride-based laser diode and a silicon nitride photonic chip-based microresonator operating at ultra-low wavelengths down to 410 nm in the near-ultraviolet wavelength region, which is suitable for atomic transitions addressing in applications such as atomic clocks, quantum computing, or underwater LiDAR. By self-injection locking of the Fabry-Perot diode laser to a high-Q photonic integrated microresonator, we achieve more than 100x reduction in optical phase noise at 461 nm, limited by the device quality factor and back-reflection.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of implantable photonic neural probes to overcome the limitations of traditional light-sheet microscopes for imaging non-transparent brain tissues. These probes can generate planar patterned illumination in brain tissues without additional micro-optic components. The new neural probes pave the way for new variants of LSFM for deep brain imaging and experiments in freely moving animals.

Low-loss broadband bi-layer edge couplers for visible light

Yiding Lin et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a bi-layer silicon nitride edge coupler that achieves low-loss coupling with fibers over a broad optical wavelength range. By gradually transferring input light into high-confinement single-mode waveguides, this design enables efficient routing while maintaining a minimum lithographic feature size. The fiber-to-chip coupling loss of this design is significantly lower (about 3 to 5 dB) compared to single-layer designs with similar waveguide confinement and feature size limitations.
