Inequality is rising where social network segregation interacts with urban topology

Gergo Toth et al.

Summary: Social networks amplify inequalities through mechanisms such as homophily and triadic closure, leading to social segregation reflected in fragmented network structures. Geographical barriers like rivers and railroads in towns contribute to higher network fragmentation, along with neighborhoods being distant from the town center and amenities being spatially concentrated. These urban geography features are shown to have significant relationships with income inequality via social network fragmentation.

Diffusion segregation and the disproportionate incidence of COVID-19 in African American communities

Aleix Bassolas et al.

Summary: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affects specific ethnic and socio-economic minorities, with Black and African American communities being hit especially hard by the virus. Research suggests that the impact on these groups may be due to a combination of known risk factors. The concept of diffusion segregation, which focuses on people's commuting habits, is found to be significantly associated with the excess COVID-19 incidence and mortality in African American communities at the beginning of the pandemic.
