Nonlinear Signatures of VLF-Triggered Emissions: A Simulation Study

Takeshi Nogi et al.

Summary: We conducted a particle-in-cell simulation to reproduce the triggering process of whistler-mode rising-tone emissions. We found that the rising-tone elements with increasing frequencies are generated through the self-sustaining formation of a long subpacket in the upstream region, which then splits into smaller subpackets during propagation.

Cross-Energy Couplings from Magnetosonic Waves to Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron Waves through Cold Ion Heating inside the Plasmasphere

Kazushi Asamura et al.

Summary: Using a novel wave-particle interaction analysis, this study provides observational evidence of energy transfer from fast magnetosonic waves (MSWs) to low-energy protons in the magnetosphere, which are further converted to excite electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves. The analysis also reveals a new energy transfer path of exciting electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves in the magnetosphere, indicating a complex interplay between various wave modes and particle populations.

Parker Solar Probe Evidence for Scattering of Electrons in the Young Solar Wind by Narrowband Whistler-mode Waves

C. Cattell et al.

Summary: Observations from the Parker Solar Probe show that narrowband whistler-mode waves can scatter strahl-energy electrons, resulting in characteristic electron distribution patterns with energy-dependent scattering mechanisms. This provides strong evidence for the interaction between electrons and whistler-mode waves, influencing the electron heat flux and producing halo distributions.

Nonlinear wave growth theory of whistler-mode chorus and hiss emissions in the magnetosphere

Yoshiharu Omura

Summary: This paper summarizes the nonlinear processes associated with the generation of whistler-mode chorus emissions, including the interaction between energetic electrons and coherent whistler-mode waves to form electromagnetic electron holes or hills, and the conditions for resonant electrons to be free from anomalous trapping. It also discusses how resonant currents are generated leading to rising-tone or falling-tone emissions due to inhomogeneity in the frequency and magnetic field gradient. The triggering of nonlinear wave growth is described, as well as the formation of subpackets forming chorus elements and discrete hiss elements with varying frequencies in higher plasma density environments.

Data-Driven Simulation of Rapid Flux Enhancement of Energetic Electrons With an Upper-Band Whistler Burst

S. Saito et al.

Summary: This study shows that the temporal variation of energetic electron flux distribution caused by whistler mode chorus waves is mainly due to nonlinear scattering rather than quasi-linear diffusion. Multiple nonlinear interactions in response to whistler chorus bursts lead to efficient flux enhancement of electrons. A realistic dynamic frequency spectrum of whistler waves is essential in accurately predicting the flux enhancement of energetic electrons.

Discovery of proton hill in the phase space during interactions between ions and electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves

Masafumi Shoji et al.

Summary: A study using Arase data provides the first observational evidence that the frequency drift of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves is caused by cyclotron trapping. By analyzing wave data observed by Arase from March 2017 to September 2019, researchers found the best falling tone emission event and showed direct evidence of the formation of a proton hill.

Measurability of the Nonlinear Response of Electron Distribution Function to Chorus Emissions in the Earth's Radiation Belt

M. Hanzelka et al.

Summary: The study focuses on perturbations in hot electron velocity distribution caused by chorus elements in Earth's outer radiation belt. Test particle simulations show that current spacecraft particle detectors lack key parameters necessary to observe these disturbances, but with a dedicated experiment and measurement strategy, such observations are feasible with current technology.
