Prognostic value of tumor deposits for long-term oncologic outcomes in patients with stage III colorectal cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Jae Young Moon et al.

Summary: The presence of tumor deposits (TDs) in colorectal cancer is associated with a poor prognosis. In this study, it was found that N1c patients had worse 5-year disease-free survival compared to TDs-negative stage III patients, but had better 5-year overall survival and disease-free survival compared to TDs-negative N2 patients. This suggests that current nodal staging for colorectal cancer may need to be modified to account for the presence of TDs.

Association of Body Mass Index with Survival in Asian Patients with Colorectal Cancer

Sangwon Lee et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the association between body mass index (BMI) and survival in Asian patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), and found that underweight BMI was associated with poor survival while obese BMI was associated with better survival. The study also identified a BMI cutoff value of 20.44 kg/m(2) which could be a useful discriminator in predicting prognosis for CRC patients in Asian populations.

Preoperative Neutrophil-BMI Ratio As a Promising New Marker for Predicting Tumor Outcomes in Colorectal Cancer

Weishun Xie et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the prognostic value of the preoperative neutrophil-BMI ratio (NBR) in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). The results showed that high NBR was associated with poor clinical characteristics and worse prognosis. Multivariate analysis identified NBR as an independent poor prognostic factor. A nomogram based on TNM stage, CEA, and NBR was developed and showed good discrimination in internal validation.

Prognostic value of postoperative serum carcinoembryonic antigen levels in colorectal cancer patients with chronic kidney disease

Chih-Sheng Huang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that chronic kidney disease (CKD) can increase postoperative serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels in colorectal cancer patients, and elevated CEA levels are associated with shorter disease-free survival (DFS) in non-CKD patients.

Prognostic value of the ratio of carcinoembryonic antigen concentration to maximum tumor diameter in patients with stage II colorectal cancer

Xianzhe Li et al.

Summary: The study showed that the CEA concentration to tumor diameter ratio can be used as a prognostic marker for patients with stage II colorectal cancer. The developed nomograms based on this ratio, age, T stage, and lymphovascular invasion had good accuracy in predicting the prognosis of patients with stage II CRC. Subgroup analyses also confirmed the predictive abilities of CEA/DMAX in stage II colon cancer and rectal cancer patients.

Clinical verification of body mass index and tumor immune response in patients with breast cancer receiving preoperative chemotherapy

Koji Takada et al.

Summary: The study found that obese patients with breast cancer have lower density of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) which may influence the efficacy of preoperative chemotherapy, and that low BMI in TNBC patients is associated with poorer overall survival.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Summary: In this analysis of clinical trial data, obesity was not associated with worse survival compared to non-obese individuals in advanced non-small cell lung cancer. Additionally, rates of serious adverse events were similar between obese and non-obese patients.

Serum carcinoembryonic antigen pre-operative level in colorectal cancer: revisiting risk stratification

Cristiana Iacuzzo et al.

Summary: This study confirmed the prognostic role of pre-operative serum CEA level in predicting overall survival and risk of recurrence in colorectal cancer patients. Optimal CEA cut-off values were identified to stratify patients into low, moderate, and high risk classes, providing valuable information for personalized therapy and risk stratification.

The prognostic utility of pre-treatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte-ratio (NLR) in colorectal cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Mate Naszai et al.

Summary: Inflammation is closely related to cancer, and NLR from routine blood testing serves as an easily accessible prognostic biomarker, aiding in assessing clinical outcomes in colorectal cancer patients. Combining results from numerous studies, high NLR was found to be associated with poor clinical outcomes, despite limitations in some studies, it should be routinely collected in clinical trials.
