Joining Behavior of Jute/Sisal Fibers Based Epoxy Laminates Using Different Joint Configurations

Kassahun Gashu Melese et al.

Summary: In this experimental investigation, the joint strength of woven fiber mat reinforced epoxy composites has been studied using different joint configurations. The study found that hybrid composites showed better joining performance for both types of adhesives. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy was used to understand the failure mechanisms during tensile testing of adhesively bonded natural fiber-reinforced composite laminates, and finite element analysis results were compared with experimental findings and were found to be in good agreement.

Processing of polymer matrix composites using microwave energy: A review

Tejas Pramod Naik et al.

Summary: The search for novel energy-efficient, eco-friendly, and time-saving manufacturing techniques is gaining momentum recently. Polymer composites have been increasingly used in various industrial applications, but their efficient processing remains challenging. This article provides an overview of the basics of microwave heating and the physics behind the microwave processing of polymer composites, reviews the state-of-the-art on microwave processing of thermoset and thermoplastic-based composites, and highlights the challenges and constraints in adopting microwave technology for curing composites at an industrial scale. The article also indicates the future scope of work involving microwave scanning route for 3D printing of polymer matrix composite parts.

Novel millet husk crop-residue based thermoplastic composites: Waste to value creation

Sandeep Gairola et al.

Summary: The objective of this research was to explore the potential of novel natural lignocellulosic fibers extracted from finger millet and barnyard millet, and investigate their application in thermoplastic composites. The fibers were characterized for their physical, chemical, thermal, and morphological behavior. The composites developed using the fibers were tested for mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties. The results showed that both fibers have the potential to be used in the development of thermoplastic composites.

Adhesive joining of sisal/jute/hybrid composites with drilled holes in lap area

Kassahun Gashu Melese et al.

Summary: Growing awareness of sustainable development has driven the development of eco-friendly materials, particularly in natural fiber-based polymeric composites. Experimental research has shown that adding holes in the overlapping area can improve the failure load of composite joints, with proposed optimal hole arrangement for adhesive joining of natural fiber reinforced composites.
