Chikungunya Immunopathology as It Presents in Different Organ Systems

Elizabeth M. Traverse et al.

Summary: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a significant public health concern due to its impact on multiple organ systems and lifelong impairments. There is a unique immune response to CHIKV in each organ system, and inflammation is a key feature of CHIKV infection.

Capping pores of alphavirus nsP1 gate membranous viral replication factories

Rhian Jones et al.

Summary: Positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses, such as coronaviruses, flaviviruses and alphaviruses, replicate and transcribe within virus-induced membranous organelles in host cells. The remodeling of host-cell membranes for organelle formation allows concentration of metabolites and proteins for viral RNA synthesis, while preventing detection by the cellular innate immune system. The structure of non-structural protein 1 (nsP1) of the alphavirus chikungunya virus reveals the mechanism of RNA capping and membrane binding, providing insights into viral replication complex formation and potential antiviral strategies.

Dengue Virus Serotype 2 Intrahost Diversity in Patients with Different Clinical Outcomes

Maria Celeste Torres et al.

Summary: The study found significant differences in viral population structure among different clinical classifications of Dengue virus serotype 2 circulating in Brazil, driven mainly by different infection times and selection pressures rather than clinical outcomes. However, diversity in the NS2B gene was found to be constrained, regardless of clinical outcome and infection time. High frequency of non-synonymous intrahost single-nucleotide variants were identified among cases with warning signs and severe cases, but no single variant appeared to characterize cases of greater severity independently.

Neonatal consequences of maternal exposure to the chikungunya virus Case reports

Thamirys Cosmo Grillo Fajardo et al.

Summary: This report investigates two cases of pregnant women exposed to the chikungunya virus (CHIKV) during the foetal period, examining the potential implications of the infection on gestational structures and exposed children. The findings suggest that maternal infection with CHIKV can potentially impact infant development, but improvements can be observed in the neurological situation and symptoms as the child grows.

In Silico Analysis of Dengue Virus Serotype 2 Mutations Detected at the Intrahost Level in Patients with Different Clinical Outcomes

Maria Celeste Torres et al.

Summary: Intrahost genetic diversity in DENV-2 was analyzed in 68 patients, revealing 141 relevant mutations. Molecular modeling showed disruptive variants primarily in dengue fever cases, while immune-escape variants were associated with more severe cases. This analysis provides new insights into DENV-2 pathogenesis.
